Spay Tomorrow, So Worried

Florrie is being spayed tomorrow due to reoccurring cysts. I have gone back and forth with the decision to go ahead. she has had rounds of injections which hasn't got rid the of the prolonged problem. I've been giving her extra long hugs and kisses tonight. I had an awful dream last night that I got a phone call and the worst possible thing could happen, then the vet I wanted to do the procedure didn't do it....I woke up in a flap! It's so worrying.
 
Hoping it all goes okay tomorrow. Please make sure you get pain relief and gut stimulants to be able to give at home as she will be very sore afterwards. Well worth being prepared to syringe feed also so have a read of our syringe feeding guide.

My tiny Cariad at just about 700g sailed through her emergency spay four years ago due to her womb gone wrong and what the vet called some nasty looking cysts without losing more than the weight of what was taken out and only months after a major bladder op, so I hope that Florrie has a good experience, too!

Cariad with her companion Bryn in the hospital cage on the day after the op, tucking into grass - I have made sure that hay and grass were all walk-on directly. She needed some syringe feeding on the first evening and halfway through the night, but started eating normally after that. Once I was sure that her appetite was stable and the wound was fine, she went back to the group cage with Bryn.

My Iola is waiting for a spaying op, too, once the vet is back from holiday again. She has a couple of large, non-hormonal cysts that make her look like she is pregnant - and she's not a small sow in the first place!

Update... florrie had her op earlier and has come through it fine. She's eating by herself and pooped and weed. She's staying in the vets tonight as the main cyst was bigger than they thought so want to make sure her guts are moving properly. Her cage mate, ted is staying in with her and i will be able to collect them tomorrow.
I've got an indoor cage set up and I've made sure she will have pain relief fore to give.

That is great news! You will find that it takes about 2-3 days for the body to settle down after a major op, but even during that period, your piggy should be that bit brighter with every passing day.

You cannot give painkillers immediately after an operation, as they are part of the op cocktail so you have to always ask a vet how soon after an operation your guinea pig can have painkillers.

It is great that she has company; that makes it a lot less stressful on her. Thankfully more and more vet clinics are allowing it. Bryn stayed with Cariad, too; and he was really caring compared to his normal dominant behaviour!

I have had 5 spayed girlies in my house - the most recent spayed at 5 months old and just under 700 gms up to two of my girlies being done at over 4 years old (typical sisters - each needed a spay within 4 weeks of each other for cysts ) - with a good vet this is a much less riskier op than it was years ago - am sure your girlie will be fine x
 
I am heartbroken to say Florrie passed away during the night. I feel so guilty and its my fault, I feel like I've killed her. I'm so drained from crying and welling up writing this.
I really felt confident she would pull through from all the positive comments from other spays.
I'm so sad for her friend, he seems ok, quieter but eating etc. I went back and forth over the decision to have the op, now I wish I hadn't put her through it. She was the loveliest pig, never bitten, and would always come and greet me. I have so much more I could say but way to much to write! Just utterly sad, rip and goodnight Florrie xx
 
I'm so sorry,you gave Florrie the best possible chance.Try not to blame yourself.Florrie would not had the spay if it was not needed.takecare of yourself in the coming days,try to remember the good memories you shared.you gave Florrie a loving home.
 
Oh no, how terribly sad to hear this news. You tried your best to give her a chance to be free of those cysts and gave it so much careful thought, you are not to blame. Sending hugs to you, rest in peace sweet Florrie.

You made the best decision you could for her. It was well thought out and for her benefit. You made it out of love for her. You couldn't have known the outcome so please don't blame yourself.
 
I am so very sorry for your loss.
Be kind to yourself.
You absolutely made the right decision with all of the information you had available to you.
Even then things can sometimes go wrong, but you clearly loved her dearly and gave her a wonderful life.

Oh gosh, I am so very sorry. please do not blame yourself, you did not kill her. With reoccurring cysts it was an operation that had to be done, you made the best decision for her. Huge huge hugs to you.

I'm so sorry, please don't blame yourself. If she had cysts they needed treating and she would have deteriorated without the op.
 
I can't describe how sorry I am for your loss. Please do not blame yourself- it was certainly not your fault. Please stay strong, and don't beat yourself up over this. It was a tricky situation. Hugs xox
 
Oh No! How terribly sad. You only did what you thought was best and don't EVER think that you killed her. Sometimes Guinea Pigs don't react very well to anaesthetic she was obviously one of these. You would not have given her the op if it wasn't necessary. Huge hugs and lots of love coming your way. xx
