I can't remember the exact date, but one of these days 30 years ago my very first guinea pig Molly moved in.

At the time I thought, I was well prepare.
I bought the biggest cage I could find (it's so small, I wouldn't even use it as a quarantaine cage nowadays ), read guide books - there was no internet for everyone's use at that time. The only problem was that Molly hadn't read the guide books as well and up to this day I'm not sure what kind of animal these guide books really were about. Definitely not guinea pigs.

Molly was a very special piggy, the first in a long row of very special piggies.
She had a lot of free roaming time and followed me around the appartment like a fellow piggy. Unfortunatly she was a single piggy (guide book said it was okay to keep one guinea pig if you spent enough time with it), but she really was more of a small dog. I even could take her out into the garden and sit with her in the grass without any enclosure. She wouldn't even think about running away (my second piggy tought me that this was NOT A GOOD IDEA - sometimes you have to learn really fast ).

At the time I was studing and I spent a lot of time at home learning. Molly loved to snuggle up.

But she was also quite a biter. I always joked that anyone would bite when studying physical chemistry, but of course she just treated me the way she would have treated another piggy. With my second piggy Bernhard I was really surprised that not all guinea pigs are this dangerous. :))

Molly lived to be six years and passed away in my arms quite unexpectedly. She took a big peace of my heart with her across the rainbow bridge.

Since then I have had the honour to know, care for and love more than 25 guinea pigs, to counting my current five. And each one was/is unique in it's one special way.
Of course there has been a lot of heartache and pain along the way, but also a lot of joy, laughter and happiness. It has been a great journey.

In loving memory of Molly, Bernhard, Gini, Chrissy, Mindy, Jerry, Bessy, Kimi, Daisy, Merlin, Snoopy, Benji, Freja, Lea, Georgina, Dinih, Dusty, Nui, Scotty, Honey, Sugar, Ginger, Cassidy, Quinny, Toffee, Nicky, Chelsea, Hailey and Muffin :wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub:

What a very special anniversary and what a lovely way to remember your Rainbow Bridge piggies.

It’s amazing how far Guinea pig care has come on over that time. I, too, shudder at some of the things I did with my early piggies. But each piggy has taught me something new to help improve the care for the generations to come.

Happy Anniversary.
Congratulations on so many years of wonderful piggies .
Our knowledge and care has come on so much over the years.

Oh wow Happy Anniversary! 30 years :cake: and a lovely celebration of your rainbow piggies 🌈

Happy anniversary! What a lovely post! And a lovely way to remember all your piggies. I've not quite got up to your numbers but people seem amazed when I can reel off the names of all mine who have gone. But of course I can because we never forget any of them 🌈💜
