I have taken the decision and booked Peppa in to be neutered tomorrow morning. This has not been taken lightly and something I thought of before bonding him with George, but now George has passed have decided to get him a sow instead.

Please keep him in your thoughts for tomorrow, just hope I'm making the right decision.

How old is Peppa - they should not be neuteured before 6 months?

Thinking of him. It should go fine, are they stiching him up? He will be quiet afterwards but just ensure he's eating and he should be ok :)

oh good, sorry for some reason i thought he was really young!

Thinking of the poor lad, they usually use dissolvable stitches or just normal ones which he *** have to go back to have removed.

they sometimes use a special kind of glue to stick the skin back together. The idea is good because the guinea doesn't have any stitches to chew, however it should never be done as I have heard some horrible stories :( so make sure they stitch.

I've just asked and each vet does it slightly differently, but they said certain stitching can be difficult on a guinea pig.

What horror stories re glue?

Anyone else have any good / bad stories?

Hope all goes well for him.
Keep him on vet bed or towels afterwards and change regularly. Check the area for any swelling/redness etc 2-3 times a day. He will be sore afterwards and a bit letharic but try to encourage him to move around.

He should eat/drink and poop normally. If he stops pooping, syringe him bio lapis several times a day to help the gut to move. Occasionally, the stress of the op can cause the gut to stop working properly. This happened with Georgie but withing a couple of days he was fine again!

Let us know how he gets on :)

Well Peppa has been home a day now and it looks really good and healthy. He has been eating well and doing all the normal poops, etc. He's being kept very quite indoors but seems to be doing well.

He's going back on Saturday to have a check up, then back in the Saturday after to have his stitches out.

The vet was excellent with me, and told me to contact them immediately if I had any concerns.

That is EXCELLENT news! :) I am so pleased that it all went well! :)

Very pleased it went well, hope he continues to heal nicely!

Thank you all so much for your kind thoughts and I've passed them onto Peppa who's eating very well and is tucking into some freshly picked dandelion leaves.

Just caught up on this post ... glad to hear that Peppa is doing ok. Usually it takes them a day to not be sleepy but after that they appear back to normal.

I have had three boars neutered in total and all were fine. And loved or love living with a pair of sows.

PS. Didn't he have dissolvable stitches?

Peppa appears to be doing well. He doesn't have dissolvable stitches and is going back to the vets on Saturday and the Saturday after, when he will have them taken out.

^) I'm so glad it went well for peppa!
Thats excellent news!

Just a random question - i thought i would post it here as we are on the neutering topic, how much roughly would it cost for me to get my rabbit spayed to you think?

It cost me £35.77 for a consultation and health check, neutering (and two further check ups) and VAT.

When I was in South Wales my local vet quoted me £65.00! Which is a huge difference and even around here I had over £30 difference in quotes - I would ring around and ask people in your area for recommendations.

There are budget vets but I couldn't have subjected Peppa to going there as it was by the dog pound and very noisy with their barking, in and out of the surgery.

Thank you very much, it's only from having a deep love and respect for animals, I'm just mad about them and if I was allowed would fill my house!

I've volunteered for animal rescues for a while now but even when I was a child, if I saw one in distress or lost I always stepped in to help.

Let me know how you get on with having your rabbit neutered.

You did do well ... I recently paid just under £60 for exactly the same. I live not far from you, near Bristol. Although mine had dissolvable stitches.

Hope all goes well with the stitches coming out.
