so The story so far
when i bought icing sugar, unbeknown to me, she had 2 types of mites, which most of you may remember, as id just joined and posted a very panicy thread
because all my "littlies" are under the same roof ive ended up not only having to treat her, but all my hamsters (40ish) and to be on the safe side, my dogs as well, me on the other hand....well I'm still itching

I have now found my perfect piggy baby, but the poor wee girl has had a fungal on her wee nosy, the breeder has been more than helpful and upfront about the whole thing.
ive read` as much as i can about it but i still have a few questions i either have found conflicting answers too or non at all

1- the hair is growing back, so I'm assuming its all better, BUT what are the chances of it coming back?
ive heard its stress related, and moving house and moving in with 3 unknown piggies would be kind of stressful in my eyes?

2- again as they all live in the hamstery, and i know its highly contagious, if its likely to come back, are my hamsters all likely to get it, and what are the chances of the dogs getting it?
i kind of know the answer to this really, but i guess I'm looking for reassurrance, I'm really not bothered if i get it but obvioulsy I'm likely tp pass it on to mine and as i have a small animal supplies shop customers dogs too?

3- if she has had it before, if she doesnt get it back right now, is she going to be prone to getting it? like shingles?

ermm i had so many questions and now i cant remember them
but if anybody else has any usefull info i would appreciate that too
many thanks (in advance)

Hello and welcome to the forum. I am sorry I don't know anything about fungal infections but I have replied to your thread about the dog crate.

Here is some information about ringworm (which is the fungal problem your little girl is most probably suffering from - it is quite common and can spread cross species - even to humans):

How old is the little girl? it determines what kind of fungal treatment she can have. If in doubt, please have her seen by a vet.

thank you for the link, the wee girl is 8 weeks old, and has been treated already, her fur is growing back, so i assuming rightly or wrongly? that means it better?
its the other questions i cant find answers too, no matter how much i read
i guess mainly will she be suseptable to it again because she has aleady had it?

If she has been treated properly, she shouldn't be.

I would continue to treat her bald patch for a bit longer to make sure.

Welcome to the forum, I don't remember seeing you here when you first joined so it's a bit belated - but welcome anyway. :)

Has she been treated with anything? If so, can you find out what and for how long?

I believe I have heard that if a pig has suffered fungal problems they are more prone to redeveloping them, but I'm not aware at the moment of any evidence to back that up. As for whether it can transfer to other species, the only zoonotic fungal infection is ringworm. There are other types of fungal infection that are not zoonotic.

Hello and welcome to the forum :) I had a pig with fungal a couple of months ago. We treated it and it soon disappeared within 2 weeks. We bathed our other 3 pigs with an anti fungal shampoo and they didn't catch it even though they all live in the same hutch.

My girl has been fungal free since and it hasn't returned.

Hello, and welcome.

Sorry to hear about ** trouble youve had. As for the questions

1.) Some mite problems can be stress related. It just depends on what was causing the fungal infections. Was it an internal skin mite or simply fungal infection. I doubt it will come back providing treated well, but she may just be more prone to having an infection on her nose.

2.) It depends again on what caused the infection. The best thing to suggest is to wash hands after handling each species, the hamsters, the dog and the piggies. Things like alcohol gels can be great at sanatising hands between animals. I like using them at work and there v effective.

3.) If its not the internal mites that caused it then the simple answer is no. However (though dont quote me on this) if it was a type of mite then she may just be likely to get it in times of stress

Hope this helps. Sorry if its not much help.

x.

Hi

Probably the best thing to do as you don't know for sure that the new piggy is cured of it fungal problem is to start again with an anti-fungal treatment, a good shampooing fith Sporal-D or Nizoral every couple of weeks should sort out any remaining fungal spores. I would then go onto an anti-mite treatment as well, every week for 3 weeks.

That way you will be sure she is clean and healthy and will not infect or infest the rest of your animals.

Regards

a LITTLE more info from the breeder
she says it was just a fungal, and she was treated with darktan? and canestan (as she says she ran out of the other)
I'm planning on collecting her (hopefully) at the weekend, ive just treated mine with ivermectin (as they were Due again)
Do you think if i get an antifungal shampoo and bath mine before she arrives that would help protect them, and use antibac gel between species this would cover all angles?
