I have a 6 1/2 year old male rescue, always healthy for 3 1/2 years Ive had him, female cagemate…he has a blast chasing her and never does anything else(she has had female organs removed) but recent inspection after 3 mo bath, smegma and sperm rods now 3rd in 5 days? Just saw vet, got antibiotic for UTI(stopped drinking and that resolved 24 hrs after meds) but I'm thinking get back, get xray, more to this story? I havve been rescuing g pigs for 17 years, this is my first w males with sperm rods ever! Appreciate any advice w experience of this! I was worked in for visit 2 days ago because I wanted antibiotics going asap…but sperm rod kinda was ignored…Thanks Kay In Fl

Sorry to hear your piggy is struggling with infections and sperm rods. I have read on hear that they can be very frequent and some boars need checking even as often as every day. I hope the UTI clears up. Has the vet given you an anti inflammatory like Metacam? Poor fellow, yes some boars suffer a lot down below ❤

My Rainbow Piggy Christian had frequent sperm rods that needed removing. He found it difficult to do himself as he had arthritis in his spine. This is the largest one I had to remove (VERY carefully!).

HUGE Sperm Rod.webp

Ok, latest update on Sparky! Sperm rods continue, he is back eating and drinking and appears good. I am doing am and Pm checks and keeping log on sperm rod removals…so I did learn today! Yes, None last night but one this am so they can make them overnight! Wow! So the checks will be am and Pm and yes, that tiny tail part is in their urethra, so slow and steady w removal! And Yes, follow up dr visit was way too quick (super buzy) so will go back for xray and w my Fav exotic vet in practice but i am fully expecting arthritis, its so common and my other 2 of 5 males that made it to 8 1/2 years had issues by age 6, so Sparky is 6 1/2. I am giving him meloxicam, right after a sperm removal and again at night. Thanks everyone! Aging in guinea pigs is alot ! Just like us humans! This little rescue was in a closet for 3 years before I rescued him(what the hell) so ive given him 4 years at the Ritz!♥️so far! and its my pleasure to be retired and be able to care for him and the lil girl I rescued 2.5 hrs away, thrown to woods with others and found by a hiker…her theme song is”I'm a Survivor” …Princess and this forum helped me save her year after adoption from Gastro Stasis! God Bless lil guinea pigs😎
