Spey & neuter today a few q's

Bella and Jake are having their ops today. I've read the sticky and i'm well covered on the medical side of things. I asked all the questions and got satisfactory answers. I trust my vet and hope things will be fine. I have a couple of questions though about aftercare.

1. What do I need to do for them other than keeping and eye on them. Will they need anything extra in the way of food, warmth, quiet, dark, light? Whats the best living arrangements for them to be kept over the next few days? Should I restrict their space to prevent too much movement and possible damage to the stitches? Are there any foods that will give them a boost when they're recovering?

2. I have a pair of girls but only one is having the op. The other was no where near my Jake so no need for her to go through it. Can my op girl go back in with the non op gorl or could she hurt her?

3. Whats the bset way to hold my post op piggies so I don't hurt them or upset the stitches?

4. What will be the "normal" behaviour after the op? How long will they be groggy for before starting to get back to normal?

Keep them warm, and I would keep them in a smaller cage to restrict their movements slightly. Vetbed or fleece is great, as it doesn't stick in the wound like shavings or hay might, and is good to keep clean and you can see if there is any blood loss

I would leave the girl having the op by herself (or in a divided cage so they can see each other but not touch) until she has healed

I would handle them as little as possible until they are healed

4. What will be the "normal" behaviour after the op? How long will they be groggy for before starting to get back to normal?

It varies per pig. Neuters for males are a lot less invasive than for sows, so I would expect your boy to bounce back more quickly. It's a lot harder for sows, she may well be quite groggy.

It's essential they are back to eating as soon as possible after the ops to keep their guts moving. Make sure your vet gives you a probiotic (like Biolapis) if they are on antibiotics, and some Science recovery / Critical care formula so that you can assist feed if needs be.

Keep them warm, and dark, and quiet, and tempt them to eat with freshly picked grass and their favourite veg

I felt awful when I left them there. All three are upset. The two having ops understandably and my lonesome girl at home by herself. She has never been on her own ever 8...
 
I hope you get good news when the vet phones, must be very strange having two in surgery on the same day.

Jake's neuter is going to be a lot less invasive than Bella's spay. The main thing I would be aware of is pain, Bella especially needs to be on some pain relief for at least a few days post op. Do ask the vet about that if s/he doesn't hand you any pain meds, because a spay is pretty big surgery for a little pig, and the pain she will inevitably feel may well affect her appetite. Better to be aware of that from the start, and I hope the vet agrees.

Whether they will be groggy, partly depends on the vets anaesthetic procedure. Each pig can react differently to anaesthesia, some will take it fairly hard, others won't. All but one pig I've had put under GA have been groggy for up to a day afterwards; the one that was absolutely fine, behaving as if nothing had happened when I collected him a few hours post neuter, was operated on by the CCT and I suspect his recovery from the anaesthetic may be down to the fact they don't give unnecessary drugs.
 
UD Jake didn't make it

Had a call from the vet. My little boy didn't make it through the op. His heart slowed and then stopped during the proceedue. I'm completely devistated. I only had him a few weeks and he was the most loving snuggly piggy I ever met. He seemed to genuinely love me. I feel like its my fault and I should have left him to be rehomed as a lone pig and then he'd still be alive. I really just can't beleive it. He was so big and strong and only 18 months. A complete waste and shame.
 
OMG no way8... i am so sorry what a horrid thing to happen, i real do feel for you, i know how you feel 8... i lost my guinea pig and rat lily on saturday (pts)8...

I am so sorry for you and your lovely boy! I know how much Fflur's loss whacked me around when she didn't wake up in March. Sadly, we cannot know who will make it - you have done your best to give Jake a very happy future with you. He will have known how much he has been loved and cared for.
 
Bella is up and about and so far all seems to be fine. Poor little thing she'll be wondering whats going on and whats happened to her and she won't even get a husband after all this.

I'm so very sorry to hear this. You were doing your best to give him a happy future, with the best intentions - I'm sorry he didn't make it. Run free little boy
