Spice possible UTI advice apreciated

Its so frustrating because if its not stones, its not sludge, it must just be an infection that we cant shift.

I love my piggy, and I will borrow the money, but in the end I will run out of money, While I can probably cobble together £1000, I'm not made of money. and I'm supposed to be going away on monday. :( Managing his pain at this point seems near impossible.

The trouble is, the rates my vets charge I suspect the urine analysis will be the end of my money. Then what?

Well if I'm right I suspect the lab should be able to identify the bacteria that is present if there is one, you do have bugs that are resistant to Baytril and Septrin this is where the lab comes in they will check numerous 'safe' antibiotics (although double check with the GL list to be sure they are in fact safe if they do suggest a successful antibiotic).

Patrick never did have bacteria in his urine which make's me think this may well be an infection. However a sterile urine sample will need to taken sometimes this is done with a needle being inserted into the bladder - I would not recommend this method, what one vet did was allow me to take a sterile sample at home for a culture, another boarded him overnight, and the vet nurses sat with P and waited on him to pee into a pot it was sent immediately to the lab to be cultured both samples where negative of any bacteria and the test's cost approx £60 per culture.

Thankyou, That has set my mind at rest a little over what will be the suggested next step.

As he has only been on septrin for 5 days, so you think they might suggest he stay on it a little longer?

Generally speaking when Patrick initially responded to Antibiotics he would do so within 3 days, so short answer is no I believe he should be showing improvement at this point.

As an interesting piece of research i have learned recently from the veterinary world... not sure if this relates completely. But too much added vitamin C (eg supplimented by owners) can cause bladder problems to become worse and flare up. Obviously pigs still need there daily 10mg per kg but it was interesting to learn this in a recent lecture.

Wow, that is very interesting because my vet told me to massivly increase his vit C untill he was better. I have been giving bell pepper as usual, but then also been giving 1ml of a mixture that is a 1000mg tablet in 10ml of water. Appearently (according to the vet) usually he would only need 0.11 ml of that mixture.

As I said before, I am disapointed because I had been seeing an improvement. Could all this extra Vit C be hampering his progress?

I'm not sure, i think this is literally very new research that has come to light, so i wouldnt like to say for sure. But the discussion was that increased vit C can hinder bladder issues. But please dont go against your vet... this is just one recent lecture and research by supreme petfoods. It goes by this food, which might be worth a go while your piggie is unwell with bladder problems...

I'm not 100% sure its on the market yet though?

I have been using burgess senstive nuggets, but thankyou so much. This is something I will be discussing with my vet tomorrow morning :) I would never go against my vet, but he seems happy to have my input so this is something I will most definatly mention to him. :)

In my opinion, the amount of vitamin C he has had extra this week, would account for quite alot. Simply because on batril the squeeking had died down to a rumbling discomfort (rather than the horrific squeal). Yet this week (this is the first week of vit C) It has gotten worse again.

From my point of view, I would hope the vet considers cutting down on the Vit C, and continuing with the current antibiotics course for a little longer. But we will discuss the pros and cons tomorrow.

Its new stuff come to light, but we'll see i guess, they seem to be doing more and more research on piggies recently. In times of illness the recommended amount of vit C is around 30mg per kg of weight, and your piggie is getting well over this over 100mg at least, without the bell pepper and nuggets on top. But then again, i sometimes think extra vit c can help? Who knows. Just wanted to put the idea out there i guess.

Thankyou, I did see the vets point with giving him more, but if that has been linked to irritating bladder problems then It could explain why he has gotten worse (after getting better)

I also cant seem to get him to do it again. I heard it when he was in his cage las night, and I wanted to record the sound to show the vet. Mostly because its not exactly the same noise as patrics video. But I cannot get him to do it again. I had him out in a tray, and he weed 3 times with no sound. Then I was awake for 4 hours watching them last night, (in which time he must have weed, but he didnt make any noise.) So I'm trying again this morning to make sure I actually heard what I thought I heard!

I thought hmm 2 nights ago I heard Patrick turns out it was Pebbles whining because Patrick was annoying her perhaps some pig is throwing his or her voice? x

I think it must be! We have had no crying this morning, despite two more wees.

I am leaving him with my wonderfull sister, who is being paid to go along with my long list of instructions. :) She has kindly agreed to give him his last dose of antibiotics tomorrow evening, and to weigh him daily. :) I have no booked bus home yet, meaning I can be home in 4 hours should he turn out to be ill.

The only thing in the back of my mind is that he hasnt actually put any weight back on yet. However hes not actually loosing weight, and he seems very perky in himself, waddling around chatting.

I just want to say thankyou to everyone for the support and suggestions, Its lovely to know there are so many people willing to help.

The no crying is a good sign, lots of healing vibes to Spice. Try to enjoy your time away, as you say, you can get back within 4 hours if needed but hopefully your little one is on the mend.

all paws and fingers crossed here for little Spice that he continues to improve, gain weight and have noooooooooo more squeaks of pain!

LOTS OF WHEEEEEEKY LOVES FOR YOU SPICE XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
