Ok we waved off our boys this morning to our vets for their operation so that they can have a girlfriend each, we decided this was the best option but it didnt make today any easier it was nerve racking, but we have called the vet and they are a bit drowsy and we will be picking them up at 6pm, i have just cleaned to cages out and now just waiting to bring them home again, we wondered what they *** be like when they come home? will they just want to sleep? and shall we put their normal veggies in the cage? how do we check that nothing is infected and everything is ok with them? thank you for any help and advice you can give,

Post op pigs are likely to be a bit drowsy, as you might expect! It is best to keep them on something like an old towel that is easily changed, and easily kept clean (and you can also see if any bleeding occurs).

Hopefully they will be eating by themselves, but if not be prepared to help them and syringe food or water if needs be. Watch to see if they are peeing and pooping normally....

Some good advice from Vikki on this thread:

Hope the boys are ok

Wishing your boys a good recovery!

Just keep them quiet after the op and check whether they are pulling on the sutures. It can take a day for the poo to normalise after the drugs they have been given.

Best of luck with your boys and it will all be worth it when they have girlfriends xoxox

Thank you all for your kind words, we now have our boys home, they are both a bit swollen and look sore, both are now tucking into the veg, they are wandering round their cage that has got some old towels on the bottom, Spike has just popcorned and patches is sulking slightly, but both are eating, the first thing spike did was go to the toilet, and that looks normal, so glad to have them back home,

You must be so revlieved to have them home again. Poor guys. I'm sure they will be most thankful once they have a couple of gorgeous girlies to frolick and have fun with. One of my boys had an anaesthetic a few months ago. He also popcorned when I put him in his cage, which was not a good idea as he had a large incission down his abdomen! I was a nervous wreck. If only piggies knew what us human slaves go through for them..

How are the little guys today?

I remember when some of my boys were neutered I did little other than keep them on clean bedding and have a quick look at the wound each day.

They are doing well today, i decided to stay at home to keep an eye on them, as we were worried, patches was a bit slow on his legs, and spike is like normal for a while but napping more than usual, but both are eating hay, their normal food and veggies, so we think they are doing well, we were surprised at the wound but they wernt impressed when we wanted a quick look, does anybody know how long we should keep them on towels for?

Good to hear they are recovering well. They'll love having girlfriends of their own in a few weeks!

What is their normal bedding? Towels are generally used for at least 2-3 days post op. More invasive surgeries require longer periods on towels, but neuter wounds heal quite rapidly so around three days would be quite reasonable.
