.Booking vets ASAP.

I’ve just noticed one side of Spikes bottom area is red and swollen! It wasn’t like this a couple of days ago.
It feels quite hard :(
He is acting his usual self, wheeking at any sign of food, bouncing and running around, eating, drinking etc.
I hope it’s not a tumour.. it’s like a hard lump
Vets are all closed tomorrow, and typically I have work Monday and Tuesday, but will have to sort something out in order to get him to the vets ASAP on Monday morning.

Do you think he may have an abscess from his little man operation? I’ve read that sometimes this happens as a complication of neutering. Hope little Spike makes a full recovery, the vet will know best x

Yes sorry I forgot to add that he was neutered about 8 weeks ago

.... I suspect this is an abscess. Personally, I think your guinea pig needs to be seen by a vet before Monday.

I agree with @Veggies Galore it is most likely to be an abscess related to the neutering op. They are fairly common especially if the vet isn't that experienced with piggy neutering.
He will be in a lot of pain and there is a risk of the infection tracking up into the abdomen which can be serious. I would get him to the vets today if possible. He will be fine with the correct treatment.

Poor Spike, it does sound like an abscess! Healing wheeks, I hope he is ok and the vet can remove it intact if that's what it is x

Hi everyone!
Spike went to the vet today, my friend took him in for me as I have work. :td:

It was an abscess, as we thought. vet opened and drained it out as much as possible. Which apparently STUNK so bad lol. Friend said everytime they stopped and put him the right way up spike would start munching on his hay :))
He’s come home with some antibiotics and seems perfectly fine in himself. :) I will make sure I keep their house extra clean to avoid any complications etc.

Sounds great that he’s been seen and cleaned. Please bear in mind that abscesses can take a long time to heal - it’s not the little hole needs to heal but the cavity of the abscess needs to heal from the inside out. Therefore you may need to flush the abscess and keep it cleaned - it is very likely that more “stuff” will come out and therefore the wound may need to be opened a few more times until it can properly heal.

If you’re unsure then do feel free to call the vets for instructions which I’m sure they will be happy to give. I’ve always used diluted hibiscrub or saline solution for cleaning wounds but opinions vary so best to ask the vet or other experienced member

Hi thank you,
Yes forgot to say that I will also keep cleaning his wound and try gently pressing more out as the vet said it’s likely there is still a bit more in there as she didn’t want to put more pressure on it today.

Healing wheeks Spike! Did he get any manuka honey prescribed? That works miracles healing up abscess wounds, saline or hibiscrub flush then let it dry and stop oozing for half an hour then fill the wound site with the sterile honey wound dressing, it really saved our little Tallulah's life its worth asking the vet if they havent mentioned it!

All the best!

Is Spike neutered or not?

It could be an abscess but only a vet examination will tell. All the best!

The area is still really hard, it’s certainly no where near as big as it was before the vet drained it but I would have thought it would be softer and emptier feeling now? So I can’t squeeze anything out of it as it’s so hard? The hole is tiny.

So it wasn’t marsupialised (stitched open)? You need an opening in which to flush it. Which antibiotic have you been given?

No I don’t think so :( Such a pain that I couldnt be there for the appointment as I don’t know anything excactly! It looks like a tiny hole.
I’m at work now ( and you are probably asleep as the other side of the world lol) so will look what medication when I get home tonight.
And in the meantime I’ll phone the vets today to get some information.
Thank you

So I just phoned the vets. I asked what I can use to clean the wound, she said lightly salted water. Is this good enough?
I mentioned that the hole is tiny, like a pin prick and also still hard so it’s impossible for me to clean out and remove anymore puss. She suggested going in to pick up a catheter if nothing drains out by itself.
It is almost back to normal size but I’m just concerned that the hole isn’t big enough and it’s not draining itself :hmm:

Me again :))
So I’ve just got back from work and been inspecting his ‘wound’. I gave it a little press but didn’t feel like anything would come out and I could hardly even see where the hole was!
So I decided to just give him his antibiotics.
But then suddenly I noticed the hole was a little bit wet! I gave it a little press as bingo some stuff drained out! Yay! It was mainly just watery looking blood, nothing puss like. Is that okay?
He was complaining about it whist eating a carrot :xd:

Here it before the that bloody stuff came out

Dealing with an abscess is no fun.
I was given Hibiscrub to flush out Jemimah’s abscess.
Hope Spike’s clears up quickly
