Spikeandash
Junior Guinea Pig
Hello,
Two months ago Spike had surgery for an abscess on his back. After that, there have been quite a few complications. Unsure how, Spike must've fallen and hit his teeth, because he had lost two of his front teeth. They grew back and we had the other two trimmed, but after that, most likely due to him not grooming himself well and not eating properly the skin around his eyes became infected and is now getting ointment and extra c vitamin. He also lost quite a bit of weight and is now steadily gaining it back.
Today when I thought I should clip his claws, I realized his right front foot was really swollen, and quickly assumed he has bumblefoot. He also has two large scabs and a small scab on one of his other feet.
It looks like it's his entire foot that's swollen, his leg feels normal. He mostly lies in the hay in the same spot every day, so I'm guessing it's painful enough for him not wanting to move around much. I try to change the bedding daily/twice a day where he sits, but it's really soaked every time. I'll probably start changing the bedding a couple times more a day, to keep him as clean as I can. He still will come running up to me when I bring food and does eat a lot. He is recieving extra vitamin C, in addition to his regular C intake.
I'm guessing it's a result of him not taking the surgery too well. His refusal to eat lowered his immune system (I did syringe feed him, but despite my efforts I couldn't get enough into him). He didn't move around much either and peed in the same place he would sit.
I use fleece bedding, with three layers of towels underneath. Usually this works great, but is this the best choice for now? It feels really wet everytime I change the pee pads from Spike's favorite spot.
On the bright side he is recovering from his surgery. It's quite hard, but I'm not going to give up and I'm determined to treat him and care for him the best I can.
I wanted to ask your advice on how critical this is? The vet's are closed until 2.1.2019 so I'm just wondering if I should wait until then or call the emergency line? I'm guessing since Spike is eating and he does run around every once in a while and does not have a limp it's not too critical (yet). Any advice on making things better for Spike so it won't worsen?
