Hi,

I’ve had Guineas all my life, I’ve currently got three males , and the one which is nearly a year old has developed a split in the corner of his lip , this never used to be a problem until recently it’s swollen and appears to have calloused
Pictures below (sorry they are terrible)
Anybody’s piggies had this before and anyone know what it is ?!

Hi! If you have worries about a potential infection, please see a vet. Make sure that he also checks the inside of the mouth as deep bite can penetrate.

The behaviour of your piggies should tell you whether it was a full on bite in a confrontation or an accident from a misjudged swipe or nip.

Hi!

Thankyou, I booked in with a vet this morning as soon as I noticed it but they can’t seenhim until Thursday so just posted to see if anybody else’s piggies had ever experienced something similar and if there was anything I could do in the meantime
Thankyou very much x

Are your 3 boys living together? Trips are unfortunately the most unstable bonds.

One of the cage mates probably inflicted. Just to make sure it doesn’t get worse get a warm wash cloth and run it over the split.

No the two older males live together but they have been together since we got them and are normally okay with each other, just sometimes have the little squabble here and there but never seen them bite each other. We recently adopted a new baby guinea and he lives separately due to being badly injured at his last home .

Hi there, just wondered how? What behaviour would they be displaying?

If there had been a serious fight, they would be wary of each other, rather stiff, the injured one would rather stay out of the way of the other one and there might be teeth chattering from the injured piggy.
If it was just an accident, then the behaviour would not change.

:agr: Let us know how you get on x
Just got back from vets , it’s a form of dermatitis , not inflicted by any of the other piggies thankfully, just something that Guineas sometimes get, vet gave him some hibiscrub to clean his lip with and anti inflammatories to take the pain off
Thankfully it’s nothing too serious and Thankyou for everyone’s advive !
