Can i ask how many give their piggies spinach mine adore it and have it once or twice a week, however while i was finding some info for Raggs cold i read on one site that spinach can cause tummy upsets ?

Any ideas ?

I only give it once in a while - it is very high in oxalic acid (causing bladder stones and sludge), like kale and parsley. Mine love it though but they love parsley and kale too! So we stick to Parsley - and probably have too much!

Incidently does anybody know for sure if feeding too much foods with Oxalic acid it can prevent the asorbption of calcium? I think I read it somewhere ( probably on another post!)

Sorry to Hijack your post there Minky!

i give it all mine and there love it not every day tho and there have been fine

I feed this very occasionally due to the fact it being high in calcuim, but they do love it..

Mine love spinach too....will cut down on how often. However, in the "shopping list" of the food section, it states that Parsley is high in calcium, but nothing is listed by spinach! Its sooooooo confusing this feeding lark!

and anyways people are allway saying this veg may coause this and thi veg may coause that

You are right Hannah,it is very difficult to get a piggy diet right because there IS a lot of controversy.,but then, this applies to human food as well,.We are always reading in the media that this is good, this is bad. Then a few weeks later the bad thing is good and the good thing is bad for you.I just eat things I like in moderation and try to vary my food.Same goes for my piggies food, moderation and variety, you cannot go far wrong with that. Mary

yeah as my lot likr 10 diffrent kind of first and veg so i try to give them diffrent things each day so there just not eating the same thing each day like today there got apple but wont get it again for a few days etc i think as long as there eat lots of diffrent foods and yo ucan keep chainging around what there have each day there will be fine

i mean if you give them spinach evry day it will make them ill but if you give it 2/3 times a week there wont will there

its like people say gety is bad but my 2 oldest gurls have been eatign seens the day there wore born and there 16 months now and never had any porblem what so ever

My sentiments exactly mine have goneoff cauliflower and seem to prefer the greeny veg and carrots everything in moderation like has been said !"!

Me personally i love jacket potatoes i would have them everyday if i could but i dont !

Hannah, re Gerty.Independant tests were done on this mix and the colourants were found to cause renal problems in some pigs. I used to use this mix and I did seem to get a high concentration of pigs with cystitis.I changed the mix about 5 years ago and the cystitis level has dropped right off.,in fact over the last 4 years I honestly have not had one case of cystitis.I rang the Gerty help line a few years back and spoke to the nutrionist there. She admitted that the colourants were only addded as a selling point. She reckoned owners would go for something bright.I discussed the renal problem with her and she did agree that because colourants can cause problems in humans they could possibly do so in pigs.I was told that they were thinking of making an additional ,plainer mix with no colours, but I have watched the market and have never seen any new mix.,but maybe someone else has?.Having said all this,I have some friends who use Gerty for their pigs who live to 7 and 8 years and they do not get a cystitis problem. Then again a friend of mine with 2 sows fed on Gerty had cystitis on and off very frequently. After being taken off Gerty ,the cystitis stopped. This like most things piggy is very controversial--maybe some pigs are just more sensitive to the chemicals.Bottom line of course is if the dry mix you use is liked and the piggies are thriving, why change.? Mary

Ive been using the same dried food for ages ,the pigs love it and was told to use pellets instead which really pee'd me off,Sorry but i dont like people telling me what i can and cant feed my pigs, ive had them since i was 5 so i think i know by now how to feed pigs

people that stick their oar in annoy the hell outta me >:( >:( >:(

so i agree Mary,if theyre used to it then why change
