so lately ive noticed that whenever piglet eats a carrot, he'll nibble on it but not really swallow it, or if any just a little. he always leaves a mess of shredded carrots around him. this made me wonder if it's a dental problem. but it's only with carrots, he eats all of his other food! and ive been weighing him frequently and he's only gaining weight. i just dont get it. maybe he just likes to chew them? any ideas?

so there's no wet chin and no 'vinegar like' smell coming from his mouth?
they are the signs i found with our little guy Duke, all piggies are different tho.
He eats his hay no problem?
Maybe he just doesn't love carrots :))

My girls do this, sometimes they will eat the carrots other times as you say the floor is littered with little bits of orange. I've never worked it out either. Strange piggies :))

is he eating other hard food...?
one of my girlies doesnt eat carrot... she seems to leave a mess everywhere... lol
x

I don't think my pigs would ever turn down carrot.
Maybe it is because it is grated.

They can be really fussy with other veg though. Really fussy.
If they have had a certain veg for a couple of nights in a row they will just stop eating it. They are also very selective about which leafs they will eat. There are loads of things aswell that other people say pigs should love but they refuse to eat.

I suppose they are just particular about food like we are. Different tastes.

thats bang on really... :)

Glynis: i never noticed a vinegary smell. but when he was a lil one he ate carrots like it was his job (then ran around like a mad pig for about twenty minutes!)...so maybe he's just picky these days...ill keep an eye out for other symptoms. and yea he eats his pellets.

I would suggest weighing him if you don't already.

This is my Fred eating a Carrot. He had spurs on his back teeth!

Weighing is very important, weigh weekly at the same time. You are looking for weightloss, once you get used to your pigs weight you will get to know whats normal and whats not.

Fred lost 41grams in a week, I knew immediately something wasn't right it transpired to be his teeth.

One of my pigs used to much carrots into bits and then eat the bits. I did use to keep an eye on her but any dental problems never got worse and she was always a good weight.

OK love :)
well it does seem to point to the fact he's not overly rapt in carrots....
Good that he's munching his pellets x)
I make a point of when i pickup the girls i stroke under their chins and do a quick feel along their jaw line, they now think this is normal and it's like a stroke. I do the same along their bodies and always have a quick look 'down there' too :red
Give Piglet some girlie kisses and nose rubs from me xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My pigs sometimes do this, especially Nugget, when I feed them a whole carrot. I've noticed that what she'll do is kind of peel the outside of the carrot off to get to the core bit which is obviously much tastier! They'll then eat the leftover bits later on when there's nothing better to eat.
