For the last few weeks I have noticed that one of my guinea pigs keeps spitting food out of her mouth, at first I didn't think much of it however I am quite concerned now as it hasn't got better. I have checked her teeth and they look fine but I guess it could be a problem related to her back teeth. Other than this she has no other symptoms and she seems herself, she hasn't lost any weight recently so I am unsure of what the problem could be. Any suggestions about what could be causing this? I have got it on video so if anyone wants to see what she does then I can upload that onto here. Thanks :)

It could just be that she's a diva who's fussy about her food! But upload the video so people who know about this stuff can have a look x

A video would definitely be useful. Does her breath smell of damp dishcloths at all?

I have tagged Emma who is more knowledgeable than me on potential dental issues to see what she thinks.

Not sure this helps but one of my piggies did this for about a week, with him it as almost like he was getting it stuck then trying to get rid of it...I thought it was a tooth thing but then he stopped doing it so no idea why it was! :/

it could be dental related. any of my pets who have needed a dental have done this. they look like they are trying to 'unstick' the food and then bits drop out. i've seen some do it as a one off every so often with a bit of veg they didn't want. like they knew they shouldn't be eating it for some reason! but usually it's because the teeth feel wrong to them.

it's good there is no weight loss so far, so hopefully if it is dental, you have caught it early. i'd have the vet check the back teeth. you can't see everything this way but it will hopefully give an indication. i've read that some vets say they can't see anything due to the piggy having food in their mouth, but the food can be removed first. our vet has either a nurse, or me!, lift them in a certain way and then he uses this syringe type 'thing' (looks like a syringe with a weird long water bottle spout!) to flush the food out with water so they can then check the teeth. yours may already do this but some don't and it seems a waste of a vet visit then!

good luck :)
