We're thinking of starting up a 'Sponsor a Piggy' scheme at Guinea Pig Rehoming Norfolk, to help with the costs of caring for our long-term residents. We have a lot of pigs who, for various reasons, are difficult to rehome or have long-term health issues that would make it unfair to rehome them, and it's these piggies that we feel could benefit from a sponsorship scheme.

I have no idea if other rescues run such schemes or what sort of donation would be expected to sponsor a piggy, but if anyone has any ideas we're in the early planning stages now so it would be really useful.

My idea would be:

1. Sponsor a named piggy / pair of pigs for a set donation per month / year
2. Be added to the Sponsor pages, with pictures of your sponsor pigs, on our website
3. Be sent an 'adoption' pack with a photo of your pig and pig's details when you take out sponsorship and yearly when you renew

How does that sound?

Vikki currently has more long-term residents than me, and there are some stunners there -so if there is enough interest, we'll certainly look at launching the scheme soon!

Thanks for reading

Sophie

PS - ideas of a reasonable set amount for sponsoring one pig / pair of pigs welcome!

Awww this sounds fab :) Our local Home of rest for horses does a scheme like this. My daughter sponsored a donkey called Cloe :)
I think it was a minimum £3.00 donation. I don't think that is alot really.
I would pay £10.00 to sponsor and get a certificate with a photo of the piggy on it and details about it :)

Just been through the guineas here and at Vikki's and we've between us got about 20 pigs that are long-term residents for adoption. I'm gathering their details and pics now and will post soon!

Is it worth contacting Thistle Cavies in Scotland Sophie? They run an adoption scheme thingie for their longer term residents.

My personal opinion is that I don't mind not getting an adoption pack etc as I would rather the money go to the pigs - I sponsored a dog through a well known charity and it was a lovely idea for them to send stuff like car stickers, cards, packs, magazines etc but I felt that my money was going on that and the subsequent P&P rather than the animals. However, a token something to acknowledge the gift of sponsorship is always appreciated, such as a pic of the pig, and/or a little certificate and emailed update twice yearly or something like that? Then if you are giving a donation as a gift to someone, you actually physically have something to hand them. Like I said, I don't mind not having anything, but I know that a lot of people would :)

Luckily most of this things like certificates and christmas cards etc can be e-mailed so if people prefer not to have things posted and to reduce costs to the rescue everything could be done online :)

Yes, or give them an option if they want actual hard copies as it were, or emailed stuff and make it clear that less funds will go the pigs if you choose the sending stuff through the post option maybe?

Great idea.
I know that our zoo and some animal sanctuaries have an adoption scheme. For a year it's around A$50- 100 and you get a photo of the animal and a monthly update via email.
So i find it a nice idea to have a "mummy or daddy" further away. That get's some people that would actually like an animal but can have an animal, maybe to living restrictions or allergies etc.

I'm currently sponsoring one of Thistle Cavies piggies each month. It's really simple: you click on the paypal link next to the pig you want to sponsor and in a few days TC will put your details and the date of your sponsorship beside the pig. I honestly wouldn't expect any bells and whistles from an at-home rescuer; I wanted a reminder of which pig I'd sponsored so I just took a screen shot of my listing.

It's £5 a month to sponsor a piggie, but you can increase that amount if you want to.

I'm also sponsoring a monkey; my "thank you pack" was e-mailed to me. It was an automated e-mail so didn't take any time.

Martin (hubbie) and I have sponsored pigs through Thistle and others for a couple of years and we've done the same as you for "presents" - I printed the details of the sponsor-ees and the picture of the pig, played about with it to pretty it up, laminated it then put it in a large envelope so I had something to give Martin that he could open and use as a reference. My brother did the same for me when he bought me sponsorship the last time as well :)
