I have two guinea pigs both with dark spots on the end of their hair. Has only appeared in the last couple of weeks, but they arent losing any hair or scratching. Has anyone got any ideas on what it could be?
Is that a breed? I dont know to much about guinea pigs yet, everything is all new.
One is pure white with red eyes, short coat. The other is like an american satin like a golden brown colour, short coat.
Do the spots in the coat look like grubby specks or grey dandruff, if so then it is likely that they have hay mites - also known as walking dandruff. A simple treatment with an insecticidal shampoo for small animals should deal with them, you will need to bath them every week for 3 weeks and I would suggest getting your hay from another source if possible. If you can't buy it elsewhere than either freezing it or zapping it in the microwave will kill the little nasties.
