Are spring greens the same as cabbage where you should only feed limited amounts due to bloat? asda has them in so cheap at the moment so I've bought a bag but wouldn't mind going back tomorrow for more if I can feed it daily mixed with other veg. Thanks in advance

Spring greens are a veg in the cabbage family so, yes , they should only be fed in small quantities (because too much can give them bloat).

The information I am about to give you comes from experience of previous posts on this forum so , if anyone knows different, please tell me ...

Spring greens contain calcium - but not in such high quantities as some other veg in the cabbage family - kale is one of the highest in calcium.

Spring greens is one of the veg listed in the "IC" diet . The main reason it is included in the IC diet is that it contains magnesium. The advised quantity to give on this diet is a 1" strip per pig - morning and evening.

I give my Guinea Pigs Spring greens . I wouldn't ever get through a whole packet if it wasn't for the fact that my Husband eats them too (under sufferance) .

Oh gosh I'd best go and raid their cages I've just given them a whole head each! What's the best greens I can buy or grow? Most of the green, greens seem to be in the cabbage family! Luckily my husband is a lazy gardener and didn't mow the lawn since about September last year so I have patches of long green grass I've been cutting off for them which they love! Also red cabbage, does this cause bloat? I'm thinking yes if fed in large amounts?

Yes.

Personally, I think Spring Green is one of the best green veg to give,

Others to consider are Brocilli, cauliflower leaves , savoy cabbage. Any veg in the cabbage family needs to be fed in moderation.

I find spring greens like the other greens make for smelly poops so only feed in very small quantities. I know your husbands pain @PiggyOwner. I eat most of the bag of greens supposedly bought for the piggies as I can't bear to waste it and with only two piggies it doesn't get eaten quick enough. My weekly menu is based around the needs of Spike and Peanut!

We eat the veg that I've decided isn't fresh enough for the guinea pigs. My Husband has even taken to wheeking in the hope he can have some French Beans once in a while !

Everything I cook has pepper and French bean in, amazing how versatile these can be. I cooked a stew last week with half a cucumber in it, was a bit dubious about cooked cucumber but it was fine. Sorry @jeffnsweep we've gone a bit off topic!

i give spring greens and red cabbage ( in rotation weekly ) but they don't get lots of it every day.. not even a full leaf between them.. it is hard cos they will just scoff more ... i am still learning veg wise - had them since last May !

Mine have spring greens moderated, maybe once or twice a week, the rabbits get the lions share, whereas the piggies get the little gem lettuce and the bunnies not so much as I tend to find too much lettuce give Mary bun diarrhoea. ;)

what can i give them everyday ? They get green bean, pepper, variety of herbs, gem lettuce & cucumber... and spring green / red cabbage with their tea..

The pigs get peppers, gem lettuce, celery, cucumber, a very small piece of apple or a grape, a small floret of broccoli and a green bean if on offer, of a night a bowl of nuggets to graze on during the day. They also get unlimited hay/fresh water. The buns get the same, only they get spring greens not lettuce. ;)
