Today when I was clipping Crackers nails, I noticed on his two front feet what looked like tough skin, the was protruding. It sort of looks like a nail, but soft.

After looking online, it seems to be spurs.

Has anyone had any experience with guinea pigs with spurs on their feet?
Should I just clip them down a little so their is no risk of tearing and hurting the feet?

Any advice welcome!

Hi there

We have had a few experiences with spurs - what we do (or rather hubby does :) ) is just trim a little bit at a time as you dont want to cut too near to the base of it and make it bleed

good luck

All 3 of my piggies get spurs, I read that it can happen when they are in unsanitary conditions but as mine get cleaned out regularly and their cages poo picked several times I day I'm now sure that spurs just happen to certain pigs. I trim mine when I do their nails, but only tend to trim them when they get overly long.

ok thanks, i shall do that then.
yeah, maybe there is a link with them living in unsanitary conditions, but as you said with your pigs, I keep my cages very clean and change them at least once a week so i'm sure this is not the reason why.
