do pigs get scared when you approach at night time with lights off

Hi. This is a forum for people who care passionately about the happiness of guinea pigs. I can't see why one would need to approach them in the dark with lights off. They would most likely be scared and the human wouldn't be able to see them. It doesn't seem a fair thing to do to me.

As long as you talk to them softly while you're approaching the cage it shouldn't be an issue. Pigs don't have amazing eye sight so even in the light they won't see that it's you approaching them so I always recommend announcing yourself regardless of light/dark situations.

In the mornings I have to go near my piggies when I turn the lights on and they never have an issue with me because of the dark. I just speak to them and they know it's me so they just carry on about their business.

If someone crept up behind you in the dark, how would you feel? Exactly the same as a piggy. Always make a sound with your voice when you approach them with the light on or off your let them know it's you.

At the moment my brood our in the conservatory which is also my front/back door. It's a weird house. With me working very unsociable hours I sometimes leave in the middle of the night. But I always make sure to turn the light on ad talk to them when I come in.

Depends on the pig Id say. I sit in the dark and creep around and Archie doesnt mind, but he can tell its me. When I am in bed, I can hear him stomping around no problem. I think as long as your piggies are used to you, then they wont care.

Mine don't mind the dark, I get home late some nights and go into feed them with the lights off and they are used to it now they come out. They know it's their mom. I just keep it dark and quite because they share a room with the birds who get very cranky if you disturb them while they are sleeping!

@walnutandpeanut I am sure you love your piggies very much so I am hoping you are checking out these things so you can make sure your guinea pigs have the nicest possible life ever :)

Guinea Pigs are prey animals so they are naturally very nervous it is never a good idea to surprise a piggy with a loud noise or just pick them up unannounced as it really frightens them and I am sure you never want to do this, so always sit next to their cage before you try and pick them u, speak softly so they know you are there then carefully pick them up. There are many ways to collect a piggy without frightening them like in this video below

Interesting question...I keep a night-light on for my girls, so they aren't in the pitch black but I never 'creep up' on them.
They are prey animals, so they are quick to run/hide. :D Just have to be careful. I always get on their level when I go up to their cage, I crouch down or get on my knees so I'm not hovering over them! :)

I find that it is sudden or unexpected movement or loud sounds that frighten my piggies. Approaching them in the dark doesn't scare them - I always speak to them softly first so they know I am there. I have to go past their cage to turn on the light when it is dark so they are used to it.
