Hi

I'm new to this so not sure if i'm posting this correctly.

My guinea pig is 1.5 yrs old and has been squeaking when going toilet.
About 7 months ago she had antibiotics but she still did it - sometimes she was fine other times she squeaked.
Couple wks ago, she had more antib but nothing changed.
X ray was done - no stones or anything abnormal found.
Vet checked spine - fine so he out her on honey flavoured pain relief - metacam i think - no change. If anything, i think she's squeaking more often when going toilet.
Vet doesnt know what else it can be and i cant find anything on the internet. Does anyone know?

Thank you

There is something called interstitial cystitis - a chronic form of urine tract infection that flares up from time to time.

I have had good success with treating one of my guinea pigs with cystease, a bladder lining food supplement for cats. She's been on it for nearly two years now and has been symptom free for nearly all the time after half a year of pretty constant off/on cystitis.

Thanks guys!

I did mention the cystitis to the vet but he didnt seem to entertain the idea and just fobbed it off in favour of pain killers.
I think the metacam is working as she isnt squeaking as much so may give it a few days.

Thanks for you help, much appreciated!

The metacam will work to a certain extent, but long term use will lead to kidney damage/failure and it will certainly shorten the lifespan of your piggy. I was warned about this by a very good vet in context with a piggy of mine.

I had Nerys mainly on metacam, and one of the reasons why I switched to cystease was because of that.

My other guinea pig has this small round lump which looks like a tiny worm curled into a ball on the top of her skin. Should I be concerned as I cant see anything like this on the internet?
I dont know how to add a picture or I would show you!

Thanks :)

Is cystease ok on a long term basis?
I dont really want to use it forever as it's just covering up a pain which is being caused by something. i would prefer to have the problem rectified than covered up!
