China has had a troublesome digestive system for a couple of years - he had one very worrying spell when his poop was suddenly like tar and I was extremely concerned (this needed several vet visits). Subsequently he seems to have spells every few weeks/months when his poop is a bit soft and he often lets out a little squeak when pooping - so obviously there is some discomfort there but it doesn't seem to affect him otherwise and it clears up after a few days (I've had to use the diocalm and buscopan by syringe feeding a couple of times - works really well).

I have toyed with taking him to the vet for a check but he is really frightened by vet visits and I don't want to risk stressing him unduly unless absolutely necessary. Any thoughts/advise would be greatly appreciated, many thanks

Are you checking his belly whether it is are gassy and tight?
if it is food related, you may want to find out which foods are causing problems and leave them out. You probably have to do some trials in order to find out.

Is it only pooping or peeing as well?

The first step I'd take would be dietary; make a food chart listing what he eats every day, then when he has a digestive upset you can start to narrow down what exactly is upsetting his tum.

As a general rule, brassicas and high sugar veg are foods often associated with digestive upsets. Cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and fruits, peppers and even carrot can upset some pigs.
