Hello,

I have a piggy Snowy who has been squeaking whilst peeing since January. She has had a month on Baytril and 2 weeks on Septrin. She has also been on Meloxidyl for the last few weeks and nothing is making a difference.

We have been to the vets she has been scanned and xrayed twice and no sign of stones at all. Although apparently she does have arthritis in her right hip. she has been to the vets twice this week to try and get a urine sample (from the bladder) to be sent off to be cultured to see if it is an infection (the vets wont prescribe a different antibiotic without this). unfortunately she didn't want to play ball and her bladder has been too small!

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. As is the vet. It has been suggested that she may have legions from where she was spayed in October (although that is speculation) it may be pain caused from arthritis. it may be a very stubborn UTI or something completely different.

if anyone has any ideas I would welcome them as would Snowy who apart from the squeaking whilst peeing is completely fine and normal in herself.

Thanks

Laura & Snowy x

To be honest Laura, it sounds like your chucking everything at Snowy to deal with the issue and rightly so. I don't know what to suggest really apart from syringe diluted cranberry juice (low sugar) but I would of thought the Septrin would have seen off an infection. Is Snowy drinking much I wonder? Does sound like some kind of blockage if antibiotics aren't working.

She's very cute :) Is there blood & protein in her wee do you know? It could be she has bladder sludge, very hard to see on x rays or ultrasounds, so could it have been missed? Have you got her on a low calcium diet? I would start by eliminating things from her diet like a particular veg to start with, maybe her pellets next, do one thing at a time so you can see if it makes any difference. You can't eliminate hay, but if she has access to grass then try taking that out of her diet for a few days to see if the squeaking subsides. Have they checked the entrance to her bottom? Sometimes females can form a bladder stone that is almost passed through the body but sometimes gets stuck in the exit from the bottom.

i'm going shopping today and will but either cranberry juice or cranberries. She is still drinking her normal amount I have seen her.

the vet managed to get a small amount to look at and it was clear no sludge, blood etc. what are high calcium foods which I should be taking out? I don't think we have checked her bottom, is this something I can do? would it have showed up on the xrays?

thank you both x

You can buy cranberry tablets which I personally use as an alternative to cranberry juice for humans. I buy it from America and works brilliantly against cystitis (it's an age and hysto thingy), but they work very quickly although never tried a ground up version for piggies, but worth a thought.

We have been trying Cranberry juice as it cant do any harm! it seems to have her squeaking less noisily and a little bit less often. will have a chat with the vet tomorrow and see what she says. x

I would have thought adhesions would have shown up on an ultrasound - as this is what my dearly departed boar Bumble suffered from after his many bladder and cancerous lump removal operations -I used a handheld 3 mhz portable ultrasound machine as recommended by my vet to loosen the adhesions (often used on athletes with injuries ) - the arthritis could also be causing the pain squeeking so upping a daily dose of metacam could be another option ( I currently have two old ladies on this as both have arthritis in their hips at 6 1/2 and 7 1/2 )

they didn't show on the ultra sound. what dose are they on? does it help?

I have one old lady on 0.1 ml and my the other on 0.3ml - it does make a difference - no more squeaking.

Thank you, Snowy started on 0.3 and went up to 0.4 it made no difference she still squeaked.

Resurrecting an old thread.

Snowy still squeaks whilst peeing. The cranberry juice helped for a bit but she stopped wanting it. We went back to vets beginning of August as it was getting longer and louder squeaking. We tried a 10 day dose of baytril and meloxidyl. Neither helped. 7 days in we had blood in urine.

Went back and we are trying cystaid. At quarter a capsule twice a day. 5 days in and the blood has gone. Squeaking is still the same.

Vet did say since it started she has held her weight.

Will the squeaking ever go? I feel so horrible that I can't help her.

My vet tries a drug called Gabapentin for stubborn pain. Its a co analgesic, in other words it works alongside painkillers to ease pain, l think by damping down the pain receptors.
Also my vet gives metacam 0.4ml/kg twice a day to settle the pain and reduces it as the pain settles. I have a piggy at the moment going through the same thing. Its agonizing hearing them squeaking.
Have a chat with your vet again, mine would be happy to speak to yours if needed

Has her vulva been examined for signs of a stone?
A stone could have ancored it's self to vulva, I have had sows with this problem in the past!
Vulva = vagina
