Squealing Gp

Hi All,

I have a male guinea pig about 1yr 8mths old. He lost his appetite and after 2 weeks of antibiotics, for suspected URI and metacam, the vet filed his teeth. During this time, I have been feeding him recovery food. GP's appetite isn't back to normal but he has started to eat small amounts of food/hay/nuggets.

Also, he has started to squeal which can become high pitched - I don't know if this is because he is hungry or in pain. Sometimes the other GP (also male) gets frightened by the sound. The other strange behaviour he's started to show is constantly placing his mouth close to the second GP's behind (neither GPs have been neutered).

Has anyone encountered any of the above behaviour?

What antibiotics has he been on? Why did the vet file his teeth, was he having trouble eating?

Well done on feeding him recovery food, make sure you are weighing him daily so you know you are getting the right amount in him, could you video the sound?

Is he trying to eat the other piggies poo by any chance? Might be worth trying some pro-biotics in that case, the antibiotics have likely killed off some good bacteria that now needs be re-introduced (which is why he might want the poo from your other piggy, which is natural).

I can't say why he's squealing I'm afraid, hope he feels better soon!
 
I was thinking it sounds like he is trying to eat the other pigs' poo too. If he has been on antibiotics his tummy will be out of balance. Has he had any probiotics?

I agree a video would be helpful.
 
Thank you, everyone, for your input. It was quite tricky videoing my GP's behaviour as it wasn't for a long period of time to allow me to get the camera on! I am so relieved to report that Gp's health is back to normal. No more sharp squeals or trying to get his companion's poo. On reflection, I think that the squeals were because he was hungry and he wasn't sure of how to chew with his newly filed teeth. Suffice to say, all is well in the GP household.

It's good to know that there's a network of GP owners out there who can provide support!
