So I just got home from a 2 night long trip, (don't worry, I had the relatives feed the piggies when I was gone with specific instructions), and I noticed Coconut was squeaking each time a poop came out. What could be wrong? I'm really worried about her, and the squeak sounds like she's in pain or distressed. Please help!

And of course when I post this thread she's not squeaking while she is pooping anymore. Does this mean anything?

Ermm no idea.. when ours was squeaking about a week ago he was taken to the vets the next day and it turned out to be possible cystitis, there are of course other reason's for squeaking when pooing. Jericho was given painkillers and antibiotics.

If your in doubt, I would take your piggie to see a vet.

I hope your piggie is ok.

Squeaking whilst pooing is often a sign of bladder trouble - and could be a number of things within that category. If she is still squealing (even intermittently) I would make a vets appointment. Should you make an appointment to speed any diagnosis along you can take a urine sample with you (best way to get this is to pop Coconut in a plastic carrier or tub and then just wait for nature to take its course! You can then 'suck up' the urine from the base of the carrier if you have a syringe or decant it into a smaller more practical container.)

Best of luck!

Please have Coconut checked by a vet for a bladder issue, which can range from a urine infection (UTI) to an inflammation of the bladder walls (cystitis) to bladder stones or sludge. They all present with very similar symptoms; painful peeing and pooing being one of them.

Please make sure that coconut has plenty to drink (if necessary syringe her as much water as she will take in one go once daily) to help flush the bladder. You can also offer watery and mildly diuretic veg like cucumber, chopped celery or lettuce, but not so much as to cause diarrhea. You can also up the vitamin C intake.

Please ask for a painkiller/anti-inflammatory (metacam) as well as an antibiotic (bactrim/septrin is the most effective, but it is not licensed for guinea pigs) to help alleviate the symptoms, so your vet may prefer to give baytril. Ask for a 2-3 weeks course to make sure that it is gone and to prevent a return; bladder infections can be very tenacious. The metacam will help especially if you are dealing with a cystitis rather than urine infection, but it is going to contribute to making Coco feel much more comfortable while the acute symptoms last.
If there is any indication for a potential stone or a build-up of sludge in the bladder, have an x-ray with only very light sedation done. Because guinea pigs have a naturally alcaline urine, they are as a species rather prone to urinary tract problems.

Wishing you all the best! Please keep us updated!

If you look back a couple of weeks ago, I asked this very same question. Pappis is now on day 15 of a 20 day antibiotic course and we have seen great improvement. Apparently bladder infections/cystitis cause crying whilst pooping as well as weeing as everything is so close together down there and they are just generally very uncomfortable. Definitely ask for metacam as well as the antibiotics .

Thank you so much Wiebke! I only heard Coconut squeal while pooping for about a range of 5 minutes yesterday evening and I haven't heard her squeal since. Does that mean something?

You stll need to take her to the vets for a check up. The squeak may be intermittent, but there can still be all sorts going on, eg infection, stone, cystitis. My guinea pig started like this and has had many treatments and tests, but it is an X ray that picked up a stone he had.

Make sure you get a vet to look over her, before she gets any worse.

Keep an eye on her in the coming days. It can mean that you have caught a UTI in the very early stages when symptoms are not yet consistent or it can mean that she may have passed a tiny stone, after which you won't see any other signs of discomfort.

I hope your little one is ok, have you managed to get into the vets?
