I have a beautiful silver agouti guinea pig from a number of guinea pigs that were to be destroyed by a breeder.

When she arrived she was at death's door. She had been bred back to back and was about to be 'lopped'. Due to this she had not been receiving much food and was all bone apart from flabby bits underneath due to the stretching of her skin from pregnancy.

She has been treated with Ivermec and the hair is growing back nicely apart from one large circular patch which I now consider to be ringworm.

On inspection today I also think she is pregnant yet again as she is starting to 'show'

I'm so down I could cry.

Some days I go to the hutch and she look slike she just wants to cross Rainbow Bridge. Her past haunts her and the sorrow is still in her eyes.

Please can you give me some advice on how to proceed as I don't know what to treat next. I'm not sure her body would cope with any more illness, complications, or pregnancy. I have heard that garlic juice can get rid of ring worm but then what if it needs to also be treated internally?

I would prefer to go with natural methods if possible due to her poorly state.

Sharing a hutch with her at the moment is a partially sighted heavily pregnant sow from the same rescue, Although she does not show the ringworm symptoms she obviously carries the fungal spores. Shall I keep them together as I feel they need each others company or shall I part them?

Any other advice will be apprecited please.

I have treated ringworm previously and obviously dealt with all the other illnesses but I have never had such a poorly guinea pig go through what she is currently dealing with.

Thank you.
Claire

Of course I will be taking her to the vets again tomorrow but I would like to know of any natural methods for her that vets might not know of.

Oh poor little girlie pig. She sounds in an awful state, bless her. I can't offer the medical advice as you need right now Claire, I am very unsure about the safety of treating pregnant sows. Is she eating well?

I do think keeping her with her cagemate is worthwhile. When she's as down as she is, she needs company. If the other sow has the fungal spores as well, then there really is no point in separating the two.

Wishing you all the best with her. x

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl. She is obviously fighting hard to stay with you and is only experiencing love and security for the first time in her life with you. I cant offer any medical advice but just wanted to let you know that you are doing a wonderful job and that you should be proud of rescuing her from a horrible fate. I'm sure there are others who will be able to suggest some treatments.

Claire, this is so very sad :(

I would recommend that you email Belinda at Galens Garden and explain this situation to her. You may have heard of her website, she specialises in complimentary and herbal remedies for rabbits and guinea pigs and last year when Sunny had major health problems, I opted for her homeopathic treatment for him for the eimeria parasite as he had already undergone an extensive course of baytril for a different infection. She is wonderful and will advise you I am sure.

You can contact her through her website.

Best of luck for this poor little one x

JUst want to send my vibes to the poor little lady - I so hope she can make it through and enjoy some more than deserved tlc and love!

So sorry to hear about your poor girl :(

I agree that there dosen't seem much point in seperating them as they will both be carrying fungal spores - if it is ringworm. I'm afraid I cant really advise you on treating pregnant sows for ringworm as I've never has the problem with a pregnant piggy. I do know that everything I use for treatment cannot even come into contact with pregnant animals or humans.

I'm sure someone can give you good advise but bear in mind whatever you use to treat the sows, all the babies will need treating as well.

Hope someone can help you

Hi Claire,

It sounds as if you are doing a great job and I am sure you efforts will be worthwhile and you will see the little lady perk up.

I've never treated ringworm but be careful as I'm sure it can pass to humans... I'm not sure about treatment. I'm sure someone will advise.

Thank goodness you've got her and she's away from that awful place.

Good luck,

Charlotte x

Any drug-induced defects would normally be caused by drugs given during the first trimester (third) of the pregnancy.
In my, limited, experience of pregnant sows by the time the pregnancy becomes obvious they are past the critical phase.
Intrafungol would be very effective, it is, however, a synthetic drug.
Daktarin Oral Gel can be effective if used for a suitable length of time.
Dida tablets are a more "natural" product, I cannot vouch for their effectiveness.

Try Daktarin cream and Head and shoulders shampoo if you think she can cope with bathing.Cucumber and tomatoes are easy to eat but I am sure you know all about foods.
Do hope she manages to pull through.

Hi

I'm so sorry Claire thank goodness they are with you.
Hope you have luck tomorrow at the vets.
How can this be able to continue?the world has gone mad!!
I have read that people who are cruel to animals then later become cruel to humans:(

Well the news isn't good. Poor Jane does have ringworm and it has been with her some time. She can only be treated with creams and baths as she is also pregnant.

She's been put on Complan in hopes it pushes up her weight a bit and gives her an extra boost as she can hardly find the energy for herself sometimes, nevermind about babies.

All the best to the poor, poor girl. I hope that she can make it!

Sending my vibes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Fingers crossed for a safe pregnancy and birth...once she's delivered you should be able to do much more for the rest of her problems. Will she take Critical Care as well as Complan? Just thinking of things to bulk her up a bit and get her a bit stronger. Best of luck, will keep looking out for updates. x

Are you giving her metatone tonic?

I think it could be very useful in supporting her weakened body with all the extra strain she must be under.

Also maybe offer her a bowl of critical care each day or syringe feed if she will let you to try and get some extra weight on her.
