Hello!
7 days ago, my babies were treated with Ivermectin by the vet for Mites. However, upon inspection today, he seems to have what looks like Static Mites on his bum and hind legs. They were little brown bugs in about the middle of the hair. I didn’t notice them moving, until I cut a piece of hair and held it on my hand and it physically crawled on me !

So we rushed to the emergency vet because I HATE the idea of bugs crawling on my baby. What can I do topically ? Gorgeous guinea will take a while to deliver in the US. and I prefer getting the suckers off ASAP.

Nothing I’m afraid. what did the vet say? I’m not experienced with mites but did they get just one round of ivermectin?

Yes. And the vet I’m at now told me ivermectin won’t work since the ones he has do not feed on blood but dead hair and dander. So he’s being given another dosage for them. and I’ve been advised to disinfect their cage, but what’s the best disinfectant for these things ?

Hi!

Did the bugs move or not?

Please be aware that ivermectin is used with all guinea pig parasites so they are already being treated correctly. But you will require 3 applications of ivermectin at the product specific interval, which is usually 1-2 weeks apart.

If the bale bugs are crawling, then you are dealing with lice. If they are tiny beads fixed to the hairs and looking like somebody has turned a peppermill over the back end then you are dealing with hay mites (chirodiscoides caviae). In the case of hay mites, please change your hay brand and cut off any egg cases fixed to the hairs - that is all mites that won't come out to borth your piggies. The hair will grow out again, even in short haired piggies.

In rare cases guinea pigs can catch a bug called cheyletiella parasitivorax (or walking dandruff) from dogs or cats living in your household.

Please have a look at these information inks here:
New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites
Guinea Lynx :: Parasites

Please do not treat with flea powders etc. just deep clean and if possible disinfect the cage (the second may not be quite easy to get hold of right now but a good scrub and soak in normal cleaner will also do for a deep clean)

a vet grade disinfectant like F10 is a good thing to use

what type of cleaner ? I typically disinfect and clean with vinegar and water mix.

when in the hair, they did not move. But when cut away and under a microscope they were moving.

F10 is the name of the most commonly recommended vet grade disinfectant. Vinegar is a mild disinfectant and will help

How would I go about treating my carpets ? They play on it so I need to make sure it’s safe.
