Hi so a couple of days ago both of my pigs were put on antibiotics for a Utis. Pepper is looking better(from what I can tell) only a small amount of pink pee occasionally, but that is getting less and less. Rexy however, is no better. She continues to squeak while peeing, and her pee is quite gritty. I am scared it might be sludge/stone, so I am going to ask the vet for an X-ray when she goes for her check up next Wednesday. Unfortunately my mum refuses to go before then. I have an anxiety disorder so I tend to over worry A LOT! Is syringing her water a good idea to help keep her bladder flushed? How much painkiller should she be on? I am giving her 0.15ml twice a day but I think this might be to low.... she is also on baytril 0.3ml a day. Also, how do I calm down and stop worrying?! (😂). One more thing- I’ve seen some very small poos around the cage. They are mostly the right shape, and both of them haven’t lost any weight, they’re just much smaller! Very worried here :(

It could be that she is having trouble passing poo's and this can happen from a UTI as well as a stone etc. If you are not able to get her to the vet before Wednesday then that will have to do and you do what you can to keep them comfortable in the meantime. Stick to low calcium veg and try and encourage more water, maybe syringe some if you are happy to. What painkiller is she on? Usually it's metacam or loxicom and depending on the suspension as well as your piggies weight will affect the dosage. Stick to only what your vet has prescribed but if you feel that she perhaps need more you can ring the vet and ask if the dosage can be split to twice a day (guinea pigs have a fast metabolism so it could be wearing off quick) or if it can be increased at all

She is on loxicom. The vet told me the dose but I forgot and it’s not clear on the label. At the moment the pigs have a small handful of green/red leaf lettuce, cucumber and fresh grass. They’re on science selective grainless pellets, are they ok or to high in calcium? Is the gritty pee a sign of a uti as well or sludge/stones? I will syringe some water tonight, thanks :)

Oh and also, they are drinking much more water than usual atm. Not worrying amounts, they seem to have had about 350ml in 2 days or so. Could this be because of the heatwave we’ve been having (uk)?

I would ring the vets to clarify the dose before anything else. The receptionist should be able to tell you over the phone what the prescribed dose is. I don't know about the content of calcium in pellets but I know they aren't the worst pellets possible. Try not to worry too much, like humans, antibiotics don't always work the same for different piggies so it might be that a different antibiotic is needed to clear up the infection - it doesn't automatically mean there is a different problem there

Could be the heat, could also be to flush their bladders out.

Thank you! Just given them lots of fresh grass- hopefully will cheer her up a bit. The pig with the orange fur around her eyes is rexy. The other is pepper :)

Aww they are lovely. I wouldn't worry about syringing water if you are giving a lot of watery veg too. Hope the meds help them feel better soon
