I have just acquired a bigger cage for my boys (savic 120 ) but it has steps that lead up to a raised area for food with a bedding area underneath

my boys are only 4.5 weeks old and i am reluctant to move them into it until i know they are big enough to cope with the steps, the cage i have at the mo is only 80cm and i worry its too small for them.

how old were your piggies when they were safely using steps?

and how long do you think the savic 120 will last before i need to upsize again?

Hi,

I take it you mean a ramp that has steps on it or is it not a solid ramp? Are you worried about them falling off the sides?

I would replace the steps if it isn't a solid ramp with something more solid anyway- and put sides on it as i think it helps the piggies to feel safer- i don't think they like heights much.

yeah its a ramp with built in steps

it just seems so high for them

not sure how i could add sides but thankyou for the advice

I can't get my pigs to use their ramp. It's actually a metal ladder but I've put carpet on it. It's just too steep and the one pig who tried stopped and hasn't tried again since.

I think pigs don't like being at an angle, but some people here do have success with getting their pigs to use them. All the best@)

Ahhh I have that in my cage but without the steps - it's just like a shelf (if that makes sense? cage is 2nd hand and I think the steps part got lost) Coco is 10 weeks old now and I've seen her just jumping up on to it for the last week or so xx

I got mine off the local freecycle site as i think the one i got from the shop is too small

looking at the cages on here i was worried about enough space

since getting them this site has been a god send i worry about everything, noises, behaviour, feeding them enough, space, toys, everything! lol

thankyou to all those that are helping this newbie piggies mum!

just need to sort out a decent run for them then i'll be able to relax a bit lol

well until the next time hahaha x

well i've just put the boys in their new cage.

so far theyve only looked around and then hidden in the bed area

fingers crossed they manage the ramp/ steps

ive tried enticing them with bits of baby corn up the steps lol

wish them luck!

Good luck to them and you!
I gave up trying with mine.
The bribes stayed untouched on the upper level.
I've now removed the level again.
Oh well, it was worth trying!

All the best and keep us posted!8:)

!

an hour and a half theyve been in a apart from a little circle of the cage and a nibble on a piece of cucumber they havent moved from the corner of the cage.

have i been too ambitious moving them so soon?

how long should i leave them in newv cage before i revert back to the old one?

Donna x

I'd give them more time. They're young after all.I gave mine a few days before deciding not to try the ramp any more. But your boys have to get used to the whole cage, not just an addition like mine did.

woohoooo!
edward has managed fine and is proceeding to run up and down the ramp and popcorning like a fool but alas Jacob is still getting to grips with it! he's managed 3/4 of the way so fingers crossed

theres lots os wheeking and purring going on, edward did try to lie on jacob a few times
is this normal?
x

what clever boys i have!
both are sucessfully scaling the ramp and have even been spotted launching themselves of it, the little dare devils lol
they even seem to be adjusting quite well to their new cage, so good news all round! woohoo!
