So Leo had an xray as he had blood in his urine. The xray showed a stone which the vet surgically removed. He said when he cut into the bladder it bled a bit too much but he managed to remove the stone and again was surprised how much blood was in his urine as the stone was quite small and smooth.

It’s been 4 days since the surgery and he’s still bleeding on and off. He has a post op check yesterday and has another one next week. I’m just wondering if the bleeding should have stopped by now if the stone was the problem? He’s absolutely fine in himself, still eating, pooping and reeeally fighting his meds! He’s on Baytril, Tramadol and Metacam for another 3 days and potassium citrate probably for the foreseeable. I’ve attached a picture from the xray (stone above the mouse arrow) and his most recent wee.

Dont worry it can take time to settle. Bladder stone pigs often have associated inflammation of the bladder as well.
Keep on with the anti inflammatory and encourage fluids, give watery food like cucumber and lettuce and it should soon settle.
How is your piggy in himself?

I thought it might take a bit of time. The vet seemed a bit concerned he was still bleeding so had me worried :/ he is absolutely fine in himself, being a little terror 😄 and it’s taking me and my boyfriend to hold him when we give him his meds he fights us so much. He’s done another couple of wees since which look better. Thank you so much for replying.

That sounds promising.
The important thing is to stop further stones forming. In my experience and others on the forum as well, restricting pellets is very important, a tablespoon of pellets per pig per day. Hay needs to be the main part of the diet.

I myself would up watery food gradually, like wetting veg, filter tap water for drinking bottles, along with the already mentioned limited pellets to 1 tbl spoon per pig

That sounds promising.

Thank you, I’ll give that a read. My pigs don’t get pellets all the time but I’ll make sure to restrict it to a tbsp when I do. I use Versele Laga Cavia Complete pellets. I’m sure I looked into pellets that didn’t have added calcium for this reason so hopefully they’re not too bad. The rest of their diet is made up of veggies and hay. The wees he’s done since seem to be ok still, just quite orange atm.

Hi everyone - a similar situation to me. Tommy came home from the vets today but I’ve noticed blood in the cage. I’m not sure if it’s from the wound as it’s very concentrated but the wound looks clean and dry. Is this from the wound or urine? I’ve emailed my vet and can call on Monday if needed. He has a check up booked on Friday at the moment.

Did he have a stone removed too? Leo bled for a few days afterwards but touch wood there’s been no blood since so he probably just needs a bit of time xx

Tommy is now squeeling with pain 3 weeks after surgery. He is on two different painkillers and an antibiotic - but they don't seem to be helping. The vet thinks it could either be that the bladder hasn't healed properly inside so it's painful when he go to the toilet, or tiny stones have formed along the stitches :(:(
