Last night I had a bit of a rough time with Eclipse. She has a habit of sitting in her wee sometimes, and it can make her fur clump a bit. I gave her a brush the night before I stayed at my boyfriend's on Sunday and didn't feel anything unusual, but mum had her out for cuddles last night while I was preparing veggies. (My sister was cuddling Jedward.)

I thought I heard Jedward being put back in the cage (not sure why I knew it was Jedward though) and wondered what was going on, but figured she'd probably peed and my sister was cleaning up. So I finished chopping veg and put everything away and all but when I was walking up the stairs to feed them I heard mum and my sister making all this fuss.

Turns out Lipsy-lu had some matted fur on her bottom that was sore. Mum was dabbing at it with a damp, warm cotton-wool-ball but it wasn't budging.

The moment I saw the fussing, I grabbed Lipsy and mum rushed the bowl of warm water she had after me, I got on my knees in the bathroom and told her to get me the piggy brushes from my room and the shampoo we use on them. (I guessed it was probably sore because she'd been sitting in wee and it was dirty, and that washing it would also help ease it out...) So I calmed Lipsy while mum was doing things and I washed her bottom and everything and when I got the brush I gently brushed over the spot where the matt joined the rest of her fur. I was able to ease it out very gently and it didn't seem to hurt her much and she was much happier once I'd got it out. I think it was more uncomfortable than anything, but I still feel awful.

I must be a terrible piggy mum! How could I let her get a matt?! 8... Am I awful? Please tell me I'm not awful! I've resolved to check every week if she needs a little wash in the bath because of the whole sitting in her wee thing, but she's normally been okay cleaning her bum. I think her fur round there is getting longer though, which would explain her having more difficulty cleaning herself.

I just feel terrible. :( Am I terrible?

It is an easy thing to do. You love her so much and are always with her. You will now ensure she is matt free. Look at how much you care for her. That shows in itself what a lovely piggy mum you are. :)

Aw hun, no you're not terrible at all :) I have two very long haired X Coronet brothers and boy, do they get messy at times :x
I spoke to our vet who said it can depend on the bedding as this can cause matts, friction etc. Ours are on vet bed so do get a few knotty bits but I just tease them out and snip them off :)
Little butt trims help a bit but think however great your intentions are, you'll still get the odd matt appear :))

Mum thinks it may have tangled itself up while I was away and she probably missed it because she wasn't able to keep them out for very long cuddles while she was looking after them for me.

I'm going to have to ask her to be extra vigillant when I'm staying with my BF, so that at least if a matt is forming she can let me know and I'll be able to get Lipsy all sorted the MOMENT I get home. :( My poor girly. I wonder why her bum fur is growing much longer than the rest though. It's rather odd.

I may have to start trimming her bum fur if it gets much longer then. She's so well behaved, it shouldn't be TOO much of a problem to do it.
