Still not eating after dental work.

Hiya was wondering if anyone could shed a bit of light on my situation, my 4 year old boar had spurs on his molars so the vet gave GA and filed them down and also trimmed his incisors.

Its been 8 days since his dental and hes still not eating, hes on lexicom painkiller and hes being syringe fed.

His chin is still wet in the mornings but no were near as bad as before, hes energetic and pooping no problem at all.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Could they have trimmed his teeth too short? And how long after dental should they be eating normal again?

If the teeth have been filed correctly, the guinea pig should be eating immediately, or certainly within 24 hours. I am concerned that you say the chin is still wet, which suggests that there is still a dental issue.

Where about are you based? The very best vet to see, is Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. Simon is amazing and people travel from all over the UK to see him with their guinea pigs with dental issues.

We are in the north of Scotland and vet told us they dont understand why he isn't eating as his mouth looks fine, she used the thing for looking in dogs ears to look in his mouth.

Could it be that she cant get a good look at the back molars?

I tried poking little bits of veg in the side of his mouth but he just gags and spits it back out and has no interest in food.

We are at a loss, we have the vet again on monday, fingers crossed they find out why he isnt eating.
 
@Ray16 It won't be possible for the vet to get a clear look at the back teeth using an otoscope.

If food is falling out of his mouth then his teeth aren't right. He could also be in pain if his teeth have rubbed on his tongue/gums.

Your vet will need to look at his teeth properly, or if they are not confident then you will need to seek a secons opinion from a more qualified vet.

Looking in the mouth with just the otoscope (that we look in dogs ears with) is not enough. If your vet is worried about teeth your piggie needs a full anaesthesia to look at the mouth fully and potentially X-rays. It may not be teeth that is causing the lack of eating so what else has your vet done to check him over?
 
Thanks for the warm welcome, Alfie has the vet today, so i'm going to ask if they can do a proper check of his teeth as his appetite has picked up but still not eating by himself.

His weight is still around the 1200g and is energetic and is still pooping and weeing no problem at all.

He takes little bits of cucumber and lettuce if hand fed but he starts tilting his head to the right and his chin is still wet, so i think that the vet has missed a spur or something.

What do you guys think?
 
Just a little update, been at the vet and they've put Alfie on a course of antibiotics just incase theres any infection and told me to give painkiller twice daily, but said if hes still not eating after the antibiotics then they will have to think about taking him back into check his teeth thoroughly.
 
Back at the vet today as his drooling has got much worse and also when syringe feeding him, quite a bit comes back out his mouth. Vet has sent him for xrays and a full tooth check up, so fingers crossed they find what the cause of him not eating and drooling is 🤞
 
Had to get little Alfie put to sleep as the vet took xrays and said his teeth arent aligned properly and that he wont be able to grind his teeth down correctly and would need teeth filing on a regular basis and that he would be on metacalm for the rest of his days as he would be in quite a bit of discomfort, so we couldnt have him going through that much pain all the time, its just not fair on Alfie. My little sister is heart broken and we'r also worried how our other guinea pig Buddy will cope without Alfie, Buddy is only 8 month old and they'v only been with each other for 6 months so we'r hoping hes fine without him, wot do you guys think? Thanks
 
So sorry for your loss. This is so sad, you tried so hard for little Alfie.
Alfie is no longer in any pain and able to munch happily at the rainbow bridge.

As Buddy is only young, I would see about getting him a friend. Do you have any nearby rescues where you could take him dating.
