Teejay
Adult Guinea Pig
Hi all, a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend recently had an unexpected pet-shop-piggie litter of three (all apparently girls....or so I was told!).
Two of the babies had been rehomed by the time I was approached, and only the 'runt' of the litter was left to rehome. So me, being a sucker for a sob story, decided we could squeeze her into our big herd!
We got her home, christened her Humbug, and she settled quickly into the herd. I think it helped that she was so tiny - Darklis took to mothering her straight away, bless her!
Anyway, she's really made her presence known......she's certainly got a pair of lungs on her! LOL! So much so that we're thinking of renaming her 'Diva'......
A couple of days ago, I was giving her a cuddle (despite her ear-splitting wheeking rolleyes) when I commented to my hubby that she was looking a bit 'pear shaped', and I jokingly suggested she might be pregnant.....inbreeding....however, I had a feel about, and couldn't feel any kind of movement, so we both put her tubbiness down to her massive appetite.
Yesterday morning, though, I woke to find two huge stillborn babies in the cage
They were still wrapped in the foetal membranes, so they either suffocated due to not being unpacked from their sacs, or they were stillborn. I suspect the latter, as I hadn't been able to find any sign of movement in Humbug's abdomen when I checked her very recently.
Looking at the size of the babies, I doubt they were premature, but they did have white nails - very clearly seen on one of the babies - and it didn't look like they had much hair (although I buried them as I found them, I didn't want to open the foetal sacs to have a closer look). They were both the spitting image of Humbug though.......
Poor little Humbug....
.......only tiny herself and giving birth to those two huge babies. She's absolutely fine though......she had a little bit of light bleeding and discharge for the first 24 hours (as to be expected), but she's perfectly well, active and eating her head off!
I'm keeping a close eye on her, though, and if there's any sign of a problem, she'll be at the vets ASAP.
There's not much point to this thread really, I suppose I just wanted to vent a bit. It's apparent that the person who I rehomed Humbug from didn't sex the other two babies in her litter properly :a19: Anyway, I'm waiting til I calm down a bit before I tell them the news!
