Hello everyone I’ve posted about my skinny boys Renton and Spud before, they are 8 months now, get on well so far, now Renton is our slightly more dominant pig. But they really do smell strongly of , well I guess it’s male pig. Really musky, slightly rubbish bin smell? Is that normal? They show no signs of infection and wee/poo all normal and prolific. We keep them on kavee liner and then on washable inco pads under normal fleece in the feeding area. They have two little blankets (affectionaly known as stinky blankets) which they love to scent mark but also love to sleep under, so I’m loath to take them out. The pads are super absorbing and the fleece is never wet. I’ve tried changing midweek and it makes no difference to smell after a day so now I just change the top fleece in the food area midweek and a full clean out on sundays. We wash all their houses /blankes the day before so they have time to get it smelling right before fleece change. The sight of those bottoms flailing around over everything is something I’ll never forget 🙈🤣. I don’t want to take the blankets off them as they love them so much, any other tips on keeping the room a bit fresher? Should I be cleaning them twice week? We poo pick 3 times a day as well. Diet is low calcium, romaine, dandelion(2-3 times a week) courgette, pepper, coriander, occasionally carrot, and once a week a treat like banana. Very little broccoli/cabbage.
anyway, not really sure there is an answer, I love my boys so much, but they are just a bit overpowering at the moment 🤣🤣🤣!

I would definitely clean them out twice a week, but always put a little bit of smelly hay back in their cage before you put them back .This helps them to stop scent marking so much 😱 If there is a particular corner where they toilet, a large pee pad replaced every other day may help too, but always scent it if you can with the one you are changing. Your little fellas are in their teenage years now so this is the time they are going to be their busiest at scent marking, along with rumbling around and generally acting like a pair of teenagers 😆 They are gorgeous x

I only do a full clean once a week. I do have lots of fleece pads for the heavy traffic areas. I change these when they become damp/smelly.

I have have two skinny pigs and they have fleece beds which have fleece pee pad inserts. Like you, i also give them a fleece blanket in their beds (i use the cheap grey IKEA ones, which i cut into smaller pieces). The pee pads and blankets in their beds get changed every day. Mainly because one them just fills their bed with poops.

The boys do occasionally get a bit smelly with their scent marking, especially if one of the sows is in season (i have 4 sows and 3 neutered boars). I'm afraid that boys will be boys. :D

Thank you everyone. I might Up to changing all fleece in the high traffic areas every 3-4 days. I didn’t want to overkill it and make them scent more. Scent marking is they’d favourite new thing after eating and trying to hump each other. 🤣🤣🤣

These are the Ikea fleece throws, the skinnies seem to love them and they are less than £2 each.

VITMOSSA grey, Throw - IKEA

I cut them into 4 or 6 pieces depending on what i am using them for. They also dry really quickly as it is only a light fleece.
