The two new boys Bodie and Doyle stunk when they came to me and i was forced to bath then the day after they got here (which i didnt want to do as i wanted them to settle). They smelt alot better once done and i put them back in a nice new cage. However they still stink! Its stinking the whole house out. I'm cleaning them out everyday so they shouldnt smell this much but its so bad you have to cover your nose. When i clean them out there cage isnt even that dirty so i cant understand it. Maybe its there old poor diet? I dont know what to do? I think its more there poo etc than there odour. The girls and Lincoln have never smelt like this!
any ideas?

only since Sunday! Its a moldy type of smell really i cant explain it. My other piggies poo dont smell like that. But I'm thinking mayb they have bad bellies from there previous diet? I hoping will get better now. She said she gave them brocilli alot and i remember Lincoln smelling abit more after brocilli so maybe its that. Its terrible though yucky

Well I have two boars and have never noticed this smell but they don't live together so maybe it's something to do with the fact that they live together and are releasing some sort of hormone or something.:{

well i have two boars together and they never smell. maybe its the vegetables they are having or the amount -brocolli leaves should be given in moderation, as well as the brocolli - it can give them stinky wet poos, maybe it is this?

what is their diet at the moment?

ive given them no brocilli just dry food, hay and the same veg as the others. cucumber, parsley, corriander and dill at the moment

you do know that Parsley, corriandor and dill should be only fed as a treat and not daily?

Sound to me like the smell of the secretion from their scent glands, located where the tail would be if they had one! They scent their territory by rubbing their bottom end along the floor.

Possibly the new surroundings, cage etc are making them do this or they are re establishing their pairing. I would describe the smell like the worst cheesy/mouldy socks ever! It should settle but some of my boars do it from time to time!

i do not believe it is their scent. when my piggies have this, its only when i've ever had piggies that fight - when they fight its very strong, and this isnt the case when they are friendly to one another.

all the times i've had boars together, its never made a horrible smell....again only when they fight and it goes after a few minutes.

lol! i like your description, i was in stitches! haha

Have to disagree! Mine do it when two come out for floor time after a previous two have had their floor time so they mark their territory. It is a very distinctive smell which cant be confused with any other!

mine do it then too, but this never ever smells, not to that extent anyhow! maybe it depends on the piggy!

i thought Chez as i asked at the top of the post meant it was poo smell - as sometimes with runny poos it can smell out the room - then she didnt describe the "cheese" smell as you funnily described it! hehe

Maybe they are doing it more often, as you are cleaning them out everyday and everyday they need to mark their territory all over again.

Try leaving them longer before cleaning them out-see if this helps. I don't think they need cleaning out quite so often.

Could be a combination of both scent glad and diet (Although I have had many boars live together and never had this smell!?)

Haven't been able to reply until now as my internet went down! yep it is the scent gland. I get this when boys have been cleaned out. Only from the dominant ones though Sunshine and Twinkle. No proble from Pudsey at all!

It will wear off. It reaks to high heaven! :))

I dont understand why my piggies scent glands dont stink like that when they do it! Ive had boars for near 17years of my life and never had this smell like this - like i said before, only when they fight (piggies i had who were separate but when near eachother did this).

bizarre!

Same here, never experienced the unpleasant smell.
Guess we are just lucky.
