My female guinea pig, Midnight, has an extremely stinky bottom. I picked her up and it smelled absolutely horrendous. I really hope she's okay, is there any reason her bottom smells so bad?

I would make an appointment with the vet as a piggy bottom shouldn't smell.

I agree about seeing a vet. Are you sure it's coming from her bottom and not her vagina? I just ask as I once had a piggy with really bad cystitis and she smelled awful. Anyway you can describe the smell?

I can't really describe it, but she's had it before, and I passed it off as a stinky poo. It weny away, but this time it smells much worse and I'm really concerned. It's not the best but it kind of smells like expired milk, but at the same time urine with a hint of my dad's dirty socks?

A quick check at the vets is needed. No sign of discharge?

:agr: with the others. Any change from the norm in a piggy should prompt a vet visit. Piggies don't smell unpleasant so the development of a stinky rear end should be investigated. Hope she gets on ok at the vets.

We didn't get to the vet yet, but the smell went away. It usually happens when she shakes her rump. Is it normal for it to go away on it's own?

Just to be sure - have you had Midnight sex checked? I’m asking because boars can emit a scent that is strong and musty. If in doubt post a photo here of the genitals and we can check for you. If Midnight is a sow then I would definitely get her checked by the vet. Things do not spontaneously clear up in my experience.

Wow, I never really thought that she(or he) could be a male. Her privates are shaped like a wine glass, so I always thought she was a female, but it's hard to see because her genitals are also black.

Could you post a photo?

Last month, I was extremely worried about my piggies stinky butts. It was not normal for females. It turns out, Urine was in their fur. I was very relieved and glad to know that their both safe!

Hi, I have merged your threads as it is most helpful for those reading and trying to support you if all the information on one issue is in one place. Please make sure you update threads in future instead of starting new ones as it does really help us.

What was the problem causing the urine in their hair? I've had this with piggies before for numerous health problems, is this all resolved now?
