Well the title says it all really. From a fairly young age Bumble has always been a bit dirty around the rear end, I don't know if it is grease gland related or if she is sitting in her own filth. She has been to the vets before and been given the all clear, it did get worse when she had cysts which led to urine scalds but this is no where near that bad.

Tonight I have had to trim her beautiful white bum fur as she was yellow but a couple of parts had started to matt. I have some hibisisisisisiscrub stuff from before which I have given her a good clean with and she rewarded me by weeing all over me.

I have an inkling that it is her grease glad but her bum fur is supposed to be so white and soft, is there anything I can do to help keep her clean or is it a matter of regular bum washing?

The grease gland is sitting about a finger's width above the genital when you look from behind. It the gland crusty and the hair around it greasy?

You will never get the hair around the bottom completely white. Some piggies have hair that acts like sponge; my Tanni is one of them. As Bumble is suffering from urine scald, I would recommend to keep any hair around the bum cut as short as possible to prevent soaking and matting. Please also change cosies very regularly to prevent her sitting in urine.

Instead of using strong shampoos, I would recommend a regular quick bum bath just in hand warm water.

How old is Bumble? Arthritis in the legs can often lead to a wet bum in older piggies, amongst other reasons.

Thanks Wiebke, she doesn't have urine scalds. She had some last year when cysts were causing incontinence but they healed quickly and she was spayed.

I think it is her grease gland as yes it looks quite crusty these days. I don't expect her to be white anymore, she's been yellow so long lol but the matting does concern me as I worry it could trap bacteria etc and cause uti's and such like.

She is now just over 4 and a half, she does look more spritely now she has a friend she can boss around (she used to the timid underpig but Issy has let her boss her around). I felt her bum before cleaning it and it felt quite dry so hoping she isn't sitting in her own filth too much. I shall go ahead with a bit more regular cleaning with just warm water and see how she gets on with that.

Just check her weekly for mats and cut them out as soon as you feel them forming. By bathing in warm water, you can also help to prevent matting.

Sundae is a girl with a really active grease gland too. We have to bathe her (just her bum) pretty often. It seems to flare up and then calm down and then flare up again. Right now she's very greasy!
