The latest batch of Hay I bought seems really stinky - is it poorer quality?
Is there a good brand I can try which smells less? I guess because I have hayfever I'm a little sensitive to it ;)

Perhaps I'm just a fusspot that doesn't like the smell of the hay!

Now the woodchip that's another matter ;)

I have found this batch of hay (from my local pet shop, but grown and sorced locally) has been a stronger smell than others! I was worried at first something might be wrong with it, but after smelling the hay in other shops (the owners think I'm bonkers! hehe) I have found this batch of hay in my area just seems to smell more. It just smells very strongly of hay. :)

If it smells moldy or damp in anyway i wouldnt feed it to the piggies. Some hays smell stronger than others, but i do like the fresh green smell of hay.
Good quality hays are excel and oxbow which i usually buy my lot, but i use lesser quality for bedding as i cant afford expensive hay being peed on. lol.

x.

I only buy Hay that i would be happy to feed to a horse. Nothing dusty, damp or musty / mouldy smelling.

They best stuff usually costs a £1 or more extra but its worth it. Fresh meadow hay that has been barn stored and not rained on is what i insist on.
I'm pretty lucky that the farm shop i buy mine from have the older cheaper hay ( use that for my chickens to nest on ) away from the newer more expensive hay ( and *** happily bag up and sell loose bits and label them accordingly :-)

I always make sure any hay I buy smells lovely and fresh. You can instantly tell whether its good quality or not as it smells really sweet when its very fresh and green :)
