I've never owned a pig before - El Super Beasto the Astrocreep is my first guinea pig. I have owned dozens upon dozens of rabbits. I am very well educated in dogs and cats, but piggies are a whole new adventure for me!

I have a black Skinnypig. I have him in a medium plastic base-wire top cage in my living room. I use the origional care fresh for bedding.

I find I'm cleaning his cage once a day... I never had to clean my large rabbits cage once a day, they never smelt the way that Beasto does. The amount he defecates worries me! In dogs and cats, and even humans, the more we defecate the more bulk we are putting in our body... and that not a lot of it is being absorbed!

Is it the same with pigs, or are they just chronic poopers? I grabbed the Hagen brand kibbles... I know Hagen isn't the best when it comes to dog and cat food.. is it the same for pigs?

Hehe mine poop a lot too, means poop scooping everyday, if I'm around then sometimes twice a day! From what I gather its normal for piggies to poop a lot but do you mean you have to do a full bedding change because it is too dirty everyday?

Skinny pigs sleep, eat and poop more than the average pigs does. The males also have a more pungent odour (well my boy does). I tried Carefresh too - I don't like the smell of it at all. Megazorb (not sure if that's available in Canada) was also too smelly.

One of the nicer beddings I use is a recycled material from the off cuts of tea bags - it has the faint perfume of tea and when it gets wet it smells more strongly of tea than it does of pee.

Shredded cardboard also worked well though it did tend to stick to the bottom of the cage a bit.

By far the most popular bedding in the UK for skinnies is fleece blankets with absorbent material underneath (incontinence bed covers are V good).

yeah! Gutting it cleaning it qith urine destroyer and then sprintzing it with baby powder critter spray! I've cut back on the amount he is able to eat in a day and its reduced the poop/cleaning but I don't want him to go hungry because I think he stinks...

Generally, guinea pigs need

Unlimited hay 24/7 (this is essential to their diet, everything else can be limited but this cannot)
A good quality pellet/musli food. In the uk our main brands are excell, science sellective, wagg. I'm not sure about hagen as i have never herd of it.
1 cup of fresh fruit/veg per day (we have a veg list wwhich i am always refering too that tells good/bad food at the top of our food department)

Usually over here a single piggie would be in a cage about 100cmsx60cms.

But the others who have commented know more about skinnys, so I'm not sure about anything else sorry!

tea bags sounds sooo interesting thank you! As for the fleece bedding I'm entrigued but I have made a bed for him that needs constant washing, & while it sits and waits in the wash it can stink the room up too. Hmmm! Although a nice blanket flooring does sound comfortable...

This was all great! Thank you so much!

Just to clarify, by limited, i dont mean got rid of. :) I'm not sure how much pellets a skinny pig should eat hopefully someone else with come and chime in there.

In regard to feeding skinny pigs - they eat approx 50% more than the normal hairy pig. Restricting the amount of food to reduce the amount of poop produced is not something I would ever advise. A guinea pig under 9 months should have access to unlimited pellets as they are still actively growing, unlimited hay and approx 50g of veg per day.

If you are feeding brassica type veg (cabbage, kale, etc) does make pee and poop smell more.

You will need to wash fleece etc at high temps to kill the bacteria - this should help eradicate the odour too.

A cat litter tray with carefresh under a covering of hay will often be used as a toilet so can be clean more often and keep the rest of the cage cleaner - placing it under the hay rack will encourage them to use it.

Are you considering getting him a cagemate? It is a very important part of piggy life to have another pig to communicate and interact with.
