my boar is 7 month old now and the last few weeks he has been increasingly strange, he kept humping things :S now i know this is common in dogs but didnt think it was in guinea pigs.hes also quiet nippy hes bit me and my daughter on several occasions.
so last 2 weeks hes stopped humping but has this horrid smell about him, i clean the cage all the time but doesnt seem to be the cage that smells as when hes not in there you cant smell anythink, but when i have him out he has a stronnnnng smell, almost breath taking n if * stroke him the smell gets stuck to your hands, iv bathed him, put talc on him ( yes i know thats **** not the best thing but i was lost for ideas ) and he still smells to the point people r actually commenting about him smelling.

iv thought about geting him castrated, will this help? i use hay ontop of news paper for him at the moment is there anythink else anyone suggests?

any ideas welcome as I'm just completly at a loss with him

Hi I have two boys who are one year old now and they dont have a smell like that but they all can be different. All I have learnt on this site is from about the age of yours you should start to bath them and clean there grease gland you can see how to do this by looking at the sticky thread on caring and bathing your guinea pig. It says that some pigs can get blockages at the grease gland as the gland is more active, I dont no if this can cause a smell or not hope this helps thanks Nicky.

Getting the piggie castrated wont help with the urge to hump. Piggies grease glands can smell so check that out first. Also, are his droppings okay. A urine infection could cause an odour so if you can check that his urine is not discoloured or contain blood..

he may have some hormonal imbalance. I would try to contact Laura-CCC4 or maybe Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas. She makes a range of lotions and potions for piggies in need.

he happily has a bath but it doesnt seem to stop the smell at all, once his fur dries out he smells again, his poo is normal n iv not noticed andythink unusal with his urine n he doesnt sqeek when he wees or anythink, will having him castrated stop his greese gland? the humpin stopped bout 2 weeks ago, and shortly after he stopped humping the smell started :s

my boys were 6 months on dec 30th and they too had a spell of being extremely smelly

i thought it was because they werent drinking enough fluids but it stoppped as suddenly as it started

is it perhaps hormonal?

Neutering won;t hlep with the humping but I think it will definitely help with the smell...unless it's caused by a urine infection.

I have both neutered and un-neutered boars...the latter are deffo MUCH more smelly. One boar I had (Beechie - brother of the two un-neutered ones)...stopped smelling following neutering ...and also his grease gland became far less active.....I was really happy as I never had to clean it (or his rump) again.

Having said that....one of my un-neutered boars (the less dominant of the pair of Beechie's brothers) never had a smell problem...until he developed a urine infection......
