hi ,I was just wondering if one of my girls may have a problem.Have noticed when cleaning out the cage that her wee is very strong dark yellow almost orange and a strong odour(acidic).other than this she is fine eating well popcorning around the room .have been keeping an eye out for blood ,but have not seen any ,was thinking it may be kidney stones developing? Has anyone come across a similar thing ?

Hi Lynne,

It depends what your sow has been eating. If you sow has eaten a lot of carrot recently - this will lead to her having a darker colour of urine (orange to brown scale). The same is true of dandelion. The smell could also be caused by her foods oit would be helpful to know what she's been eating.

I try not to jump to any conclusions but it could be nothing or it could be something...

One a more general note. A lot of owners seem to feed their piggies too much carrot. It's ok and does contain vitamin C but is also high in sugar and contains other, more harmful chemicals. Carrot tops are a better, safer source of vitamin C and can be fed more frequently. The actual carrot should be fed sparingly, as a treat :)

hi thanks for the advice.luna shares a cage with her 2 daughters, altogether I have 5 sows and they all eat the same and their urine is clear and not smelly, thats why am a bit worried. As for the carrot they have carrot about 2 a week .I try to follow the diet one of the members on here made ,she worked out calcium levels and vitamin levels ,so they are eating a high vit c but not too much calcium sort of diet xx

It could be a number of things. Try giving her no carrot or dandelion or anyhting with carrotine or other dyes in it and see if it clears up.

I would also try to watch her when she pees. If she seems uncomfortable in any way or squeeks before, during or just after peeing, she could have a bladder infection. You can try unsweetened, diluted cranberry juice to help but if she has an infection she will need antibiotics right away.

As ever, if in doubt take Luna to see her vet.

Sorry I can;t help more than that.

to much scotch/larger. no seriouse, is she getting pushed away from the water bottle by the other, i had that a bit from my males so i added another water bottle untill they shared better then it stopped, just a pos
