Hi everyone,

Last night when I was cleaning out the litter tray in my girls cage, I noticed Gloria started squeaking as she was weeing, it ended with a loud squeak and she raised her hind end and I thought I saw something pop out, I assumed a poop.
I obviously thought maybe a UTI or stone. The next time she wee'd, like 10 mins later, it was a quieter series of squeaks, no loud final squeak at the end and I didnt see her raising her end.
Then this morning before we went to work we saw her wee with no squeaking at all, just normal.

She is eatin and drinking as usual and is not at all lethargic.

She is off to the vets this afternoon at 2:30. Just thought I would ask your opinions, as the squeaking suggests a UTI but the raised bum and loud squeak would suggest a stone, which maybe she was passing when she did the loud squeak and thats why everything was normal this morning?

Good to hear you are taking her to the vets and I'm sure they will be able to tell you for sure what they think its is.

If i was you i would take a urine sample along for them to test and ask if they will give you septrin as thats is the best antibiotic for UTI's and its much less harsh on the guts than baytril. Then keep an eye on her for the course of the septrin and if she dosent get any better than have a xray to see if she has any stones. Also you could try syringing her cranberry juice and barley gloop and increase her fluid intake so her bladder gets flushed out.

Here's how to make barley gloop:http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/cystitis.htm Its half way down the page i think.

Hope all goes well at the vets. x x

Unfortunately its the other half thats taking her as I'm at work so I will have to relay this info to him.
How do you take a urine sample from a guinea pig?
The OH is getting the cranberry juice while he is at work so will start that tonight.
She is still drinking plenty whihc is good, she was at the water bottle for a good 20 mins this morning, eating hay then having a drink then more hay etc.

If I cant get Septrin and have to have Baytril, do I give her the probiotic vitamin C stuff that they sell in the vets? Ive forgotten the name now! To help ease her tummy? I also read that mushing up some fresh poops with water and syringing that is good for the gut when on antibiotics.

I know this sounds really patronising, but I always think the vet is gonna not know about bladder stones or something! Which is silly cos the vets here are really good, but I just get panicked.

You get a urine sample by sitting your guinea pig on a pure plastic surface (easiest is a plasic tray from where it can't get out) for some time, so you then can suck pee from hopefully several pees in a syringe. Place the syringe in a little freezer bag and keep it in the fridge. Please be aware that not all pees do contain blood even if a piggy has got UTI - even if the pee is red.

I always ask for Avipro plus probiotic in connection with UTI as it doesn't contain any extra calcium. If you can, print out the UTI page from Guinea Lynx and show to your vet. The bactrim mentioned on there has the same active ingredient as pediatric septrin.

Good news, its neither!

Just spoke to the OH and basically after giving her abdomen a good palpate and various other checks, the vet says she is very bloated and has a lot of gas. She says its from being fed too much "rich" veg and we need to change her diet slightly. And that the squealing we heard was her in pain from trapped gas, just like a human, it also explains why I thought I saw a poop pop out when she did a big squeak.

She poop'd and pee'd at the vets, with no complaints at all and both were normal.

She checked their teeth and everything and gave them the all clear.

I'm so pleased :D

Good news indeed!

It might be a good idea to test veg by adding one new variety every day, so you can see which veg are causing her problems. Leave out all cabbages!

When I get home from work I'm gonna do a good bit more research on what foods can be gassy and stuff.

Yes no cabbage! We have been giving them spinach lately, maybe that hasnt helped?
