Junior Guinea Pig
Hello! My guinea pig, Piglet, had the strangest past few days and I was hoping maybe there’d be some answers. Just to preface, he is practically back to normal, so nothing big to worry about (I hope)!
On Sunday night, I’d noticed him acting very, very poorly even after acting completely fine and normal in the morning and afternoon. He’d been in a hide all night while I was working on projects, and I decided to check on him since I heard a very “wet” sounding noise for lack of a better term. When I checked on him, his mouth and chest were drenched and I noticed the fur around his nose was green from whatever this was. He was refusing treats, lethargic, hunched over, and puffed up. I noticed he felt a bit thin too. He was also lurching forward and making a strange “wet” noise again, almost as if it were coming from his chest, and I felt that he might’ve been in respiratory distress. He’s 6 years old now, so I was very scared for what it could’ve been, and honestly did not look like he was going to make it through the night.
I stayed up with him practically all night and called my regular vet in the morning to see if they had any openings and when I found out they didn’t, I was luckily directed to a 24/7 vet relatively close by that I could take him to. He’d been acting similar in the morning, still bad, but seemed like his breathing had gotten a lot better and he was practically completely dry. In the 2 and a half hours it took to get to the vet, he started acting a bit more normal. Still didn’t take much interest in food, but ate half of a treat, went to drink water on his own, etc. When we got to the vet, he ran a few tests on him and they all came back surprisingly normal, the only comment was that he was a bit underweight, but nothing else. We got sent home with some Meloxicam and TMS just in case, and he’s been taking those since Monday evening. When we’d gotten home, he munched a little on some food on his own, and his drinking has been consistently good even from when he was acting so poorly.
Yesterday (Tuesday), he was still not taking too much interest in food and eating slowly, but was still eating on his own. I still went in with some critical care, but he was eating! By the evening, he was acting practically normal and was eating pellets and treats on his own, and even munched on a little hay. This morning, he is acting completely normal. Running around, bothering his cagemate, eating at a normal pace and a normal amount, begging for food at the sound of rustling lol!
I am obviously so glad he is feeling so much better, but I’m just confused as what it might’ve been. He was exhibiting no signs before that anything was wrong, it was all just so sudden and so terrible in the span of a few hours. I honestly had thought it was pneumonia at first even without the presence of eye discharge, but I feel that I’ve heard it takes way longer to recover from, and also he had started acting a bit better the morning after even without using any sort of medication or going to the vet. If anyone has some ideas, it’d be appreciated!
