hi everyone got a strange request for help.
my girlfriend has 7 guinea pigs, which i have been lumbered with to take care off while shes in hospital.

Ok i know they need food with vitamin c and water but thats it, i have snakes as pets so i know more about there care then i do about theses animals.

Ok to make matters worse 2 of the females are pregenet and ones close to giving birth, as well as they have all managed to get ringworm from one to the ones we resqued.
now the ringworm they are being treated for at the PDSA.

so any advice would be very helpfull
thanks in advnce

I can't help with pregnant piggies as I only have boars but Piggies need vegetables once a day. Pellets, constant if young but gradually smaller in amount once they are older.

They need hay 24/7 as its the main part of their diet.

Do 'not' feed your pregnant piggy any parsley as it is bad for pregnant piggies.

You need to make sure you wear gloves when handling the pigs as ringworm can be passed to humans as well.
Make sure all pigs have unlimited hay and fresh water every day. Veggies once a day (or split into 2 smaller portions)
You need to change the hay and spot clean poop everyday then change all of the bedding at least once a week depending on what kind of bedding they are on.
Try not to handle the mums so you don't hurt the babies.
There's a link here about pregnancy, http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83813

Have you thought about what to do once the pregnant guinea pigs give birth? You could end up with a lot more than 7 guinea pigs very soon!

Hopefully someone on here who lives in your area can give you a bit of support at them moment. Especially with pregnant Mums.

Hi there
I suggest you contact one of the rescues close to you. They can give you some advice and help. There are quite a few good rescues local to you - check out the Piggy Bank map. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=209994852075231951564.0004b8fd9391b4257d8eb&msa=0

The main things that spring to mind are:-

  • Get the number of whichever vet you use handy. Check that they are able to cope with exotics.
  • Read the pregnancy and birth threads on here to get more help and background info.
  • Follow the instructions about handling, and make sure that any males are removed from pregnant females. Females come into season immediately after they give birth, so don't wait until you have babies before separating them
  • Weigh any babies and consult the threads for what to do if the weights are below about 70g - help may be needed
  • Sex the babies as soon as you can - post close up in focus pics on here of the relevant bits and we'll help!
  • Male babies must be removed when they hit 3 weeks or 250 g to prevent them making more trouble for you...
