hiya,

one of my pigs (munch) seems to be making a strange sound its a bit like a cough and sneeze mixed together but the sound comes from his throat...ive never heard a piggy make this noise before but wanted to see if perhaps it was a normal sound before i take him to the vets.

ive heard him do it about 4 times in the past couple of days at 1st i thought i was imagining it but hes definatley doing it. he's eating and drinking as normal and running about.

any advice? ?/

Mind (all Most 4 years) did that 3 times last night also...Hopeful someone will know..

Does he do it when he's eating? Some piggies are just greedy guts. I would not worry too much unless you see more of the listed signs of a possible URI - THEN you need to see a vet quickly.

The weights at six months old can vary a lot depending where he as come from and how long he's been with you. some piggies have alreaady got most of their adult weight while others are still catching up. How much is your boy weighing?

He was out in the run before when i heard him so he was probably munching on grass, i havent noticed him doing it at specific times such as when eating though...he weighs in at 950 grams at the mo...

ive had him for about 12 weeks, have got my eye on him but everything else seems normal at the moment.

How strange my piggy was doing this yesterday in her run. I have 7 piggies and have never seen heard it before. She was teeth chattering as I have just reintroduced my piggy who was ill and then she would make this noise.

Hi Andi,

Without hearing and seeing the sneeze, it's very difficult to give you any ideas as to what it might be. Have you checked his nose? If you can see any fluid or anything dried or coming out, then there might be an infection. You need to get this treated if so but it's relatively simple and very easy to take care of.

As for the weight, each piggy is different and it's difficult to tell without seeing the size and shape of your piggy. Some piggies are very big so the sort of weight you posted would be ok. Other piggies would only expect to reach that weight at full maturity so there's really no guide tbh. I'm sorry that's not helpful but there we go. The only indicator is you really. Is your piggy getting a bit tubby? Their bellies should be fairly plump/round but you can tell if it's getting a bit too big. The eyes are the best indicator but by the time you have fatty eye signs, it's a bit late. Your piggy can lose wieght but the fatty eye won't go away (it's not dangerous or anything though).

Oohhh, this turned out to be a long post. Our piggies seem fairly small in comparison to some other onwers' piggies that we know and they are 14 months old or there abouts. Biscuit weights about 1kg/1.1kg and Caramel somewhere between 1.3kg and 1.4kg. We thought this was fine, then we met someone at a piggy roadshow in Manchester and her piggies were nearly twice the size of our's! :)
