I went to check on my boys tonight and thought I had caught Smudge snoring as he was asleep and making a crackly noise when breathing out. However he woke up and was still making the same odd noise. It seems to be coming from his nose. I've never heard this king of noise from any of my piggies before and it's not like his normal 'chuntering' noise. If I could compare it to anything it's a bit like a load contented cat purr. Any ideas what it could be?

He is a 3 year old indoor piggy. Could the central heating be affecting him? He seems to be eating ok but I will now be keeping a very close eye on him.

you could try giving him 0.2ml of sudafed experant (**** spelt wrong)mallethead its in a orange bottle it worked fab on my guinea and his crackle went with in 5-10 mins, 2 times a day, with in 5-10 mins of giving him this his crackle should go!

keep a check on his nose is it runny, does he has gunky eyes? sneezing?

if he is no better after giving him the sudafed i would take him the vets in-case he has a chest infection x

Your description sounds like a blocked nose. Please keep an eye on him.

Occasionally a piggy of mine has a bit of a blocked nose without it leading to any more than a good big old sneeze, but there is always the chance that it might be more, and upper respiratory tract infection (URI) is something that needs to be taken seriously, especially if you see more signs, like crusts around nose and eyes or more crackly breathing.

Thank you for your speedy reply. Other than the noise he seems fine, his nose isn't runny and his eyes are clear, not noticed him sneezing at all either.
Do you mean this bottle:

Thanks for your help and advice. I am hoping it's just one of those things and he'll be back to normal in the morning as he is a very healthy looking pig and built like a little ginger tank!
I will be monitoring him for crustiness/runny nose.

Keep a very sharp eye love, personally I would just take him to the vet to be sure.

Make sure that you've got sudafed expectorant for children - that is the smallest strength/concentration. My eyes are not good enough to see the small print whether it is the one or not.

Does the noise sound like a loud bowl of rice crispies? If so this is how my Magoo sounded (or at least my interpretation of how he sounded) & he was diagnosed with pneumonia & after a course of Baytril he was back to normal but i caught it early :)

Just to add Magoo had no crustiness round his nose or eyes & neither had any discharge.

The small print says Suitable For Children 2 Years Old & Over

Ditto Niki. :)

Nasal congestion as per your description can be the start of an upper respiratory infection, so wise move monitoring his eyes, breathing and also his weight and eating.

It can also suggest, if unaccompanied by other indicators of infection, a minor irritation - consider whether there is any factors which could link the "snuffliness" to the hay or bedding, or any products in the air (dust, fragrances, any aerosols used in the vicinity).

I am happy and relieved to report that Smudge only made the funny noise that night and was fine the next day. I'm hoping he had something small stuck in his nose flapping around which he managed to sneeze out!

Will continue to keep my beady eyes on him just incase though.

Thanks for all your advice.

Congestion

Ive just read through everyones notes on respiratory problems. Trixie has had problems almost since we bought her as a baby, shes now 3. She is constantly rattling and when she is really congested her lips go blue. I have taken her to the vet to get her checked for URI and heart problems and she was clear of both. Occasionally when she sneezes great green blobs of snot comes out. She can then breath a bit more easily. She is worst when cage needs cleaning and when i put fresh hay in and if the central heating is on or the house is a bit stuffy. I put a little vic on her nose when she gets really bad. She always coughs when eating so i have to watch her. Shes tough but when there is a lot of snot it is worrying. I will try the sudafed for children to see if that helps. Thanks to the GP forum.
