Has anyone any idea what this could be?
Bumble's 6 with no previous dental issues. He's had a watery, red-rimmed eye for a few weeks that has not improved with drops and today's x-ray revealed an unidentified object extending from the left top jaw just in front of the molars, down as far as the bottom jaw, curving backwards preventing his molars closing properly. This image is similar showing the "hook" clearly. Bumble is now booked to undertake an operation on Tuesday for investigation.

The best dental piggie vet is Simon Maddock in Northampton, we travel there from Cornwall, he is a fantastic vets who does many dentals per week mostly conscious so no anaesthetic risk. @furryfriends (TEAS) has the most experience, hope you can find out what the problem is x

Are they able to get a good look back there visually? Could it be a foreign body of some kind? I have no advice to offer, but do hope that all turns out well for him at his surgery! Please let us know how it goes!

My exotics vet had a good ol' look while he was sedated for x-ray but couldn't find anything. V peculiar!

*sigh* just been back to the vet as Bumble has a lump on his chest & is seeping urine permanently. Having extracted juice, she's fairly sure the subcutaneous lump is an abcess so will deal with it on Tue alongside the jaw/dental issue. She suggests he may have stress cystitis which should go itself now. Oh yes, his poo was also a bit gooey this morning so he's on Fibreplex til that gets better. It never rains, does it?!

I am very sorry! Please switch from monitoring his weight once weekly to weighing daily and if necessary step in providing more fibre. The soft poos are either the result of an antibiotic or lack of hay fibre, especially if your piggy has dental problems and struggles to chew - in which case the problem is only going to get worse.

Please consider seeing Ellie Whitehead in Matlock or Simon Maddock in Northampton for dental treatment. She is a vet that specialises in only seeing guinea pigs and he is the most experienced piggy dental vet in the country; he is a general vet that only sees cats, rabbits and guinea pigs. Both perform dentals without GA so a piggy usually able to start eating very soon/immediately after treatment, which is usually not the case after a GA and inexpert dentals.

Thanks Wiebke. Will contact Simon on Monday. In the meantime, Bumble's wees & poos are better (bit small poo-wise but firm & good shape) & he's eating & drinking far better now. We've been weighing daily for a few days & did drop a bit on x-ray day but still a reasonable weight & I expect him to pick up or he'll be CritCared which he doesn't like at all. What a worry they are so I'm relieved they're inside with us while we micro-examine every scuffle, squeek, drink, movement & pee! It is a comfort to have your support & advice x

I reccomend Simon at the cat and rabbit care clinic Northampton aswell. He's my local vet, he's brilliant with everything guinea pig, especially dental issues

The outcome: the bright "hook" in Bumble's skull x-ray turned out to be calcified food wedged in a cheek fold caused, possibly, by a small molar spur that affected his tongue moving food to the back of his mouth. Molar filed, cheek-fold emptied, small lump on his chest removed & he's now home. Has eaten & had a drink.

I am so pleased to hear Bumble is doing well. Do you have a photo of him? I'd love to see what your Bumble looks like. Years ago I had a boar called Bumble, such lovely memories come to mind when seeing that name.
