Hello
These strange white crusty bits seem to appear every two days in my guinea pigs fur, usually around the neck or mouth. They're not as big as a dime, but they're not tiny. I don't know if that makes sense. I can post a picture if another one comes.
The past maybe four times, I've been taking them out, but the fur comes with it. And I'm pretty sure it doesn't hurt him, because he doesnt squeak or anything.
Today there was another big one and a bit around his lip, and because I removed the big one theres now an area on his neck thats pretty red and it looks irritated. I don't know what it is and I don't know what to do. I've looked online and I haven't found the answer anywhere. He doesn't have anything else wrong with him and he's perfectly healthy.

I'm sorry, but without pictures it's hard to understand what you're talking about. But when you say hair loss, a few things come to mind. While I have only had mild fungal infections to deal with personally, I think they can cause hair loss. Severe mange mites also cause hair loss, but other symptoms as well. I am certainly not a vet, and I'm sure more knowledgeable members will weigh in and correct me if I'm wrong, but absolutely seek veterinary treatment for your pig for unknown hair loss. Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Is the hair just coming out because it's attached to the white stuff? It might be boar glue if he's in with a mate? I don't have any experience of this myself so I can't say too much on it. If you could get photos I'm sure that'd help a lot. You could maybe search boar glue on here to see if any poats with photos come up that might help you identify if it's the same thing.

If in any doubt though you really should seek vetinary advice.

The boar glue is a possibility but to me that sounds like fungal and if not mange mites but only a vet can diagnose. Could you post a photo of the red area please but also book him in to see the vet for the appropriate treatment. You can put photos on using either Photobucket or directly upload them using the "upload a file" button.

Please could you also update your location on your profile so that we can tailor advice to where you are. We have members from all over the world.

Yes, the hair only came out because I was trying to get the white stuff off his fur. There isn't any in his fur at the moment, but if it does appear I'll post a picture for sure.

That looks a bit sore. Has he been eating anything acidic? like tomatoes? The other possibility is a condition called Chelitis which is a fungal/yeast infection and can be treated with Nystatin but it is usually more on the lips. I think it needs checking by a vet. Is that the only patch or am I missing something in the photos?
