Strange Eye

I have made a similar post before, My piggy has a strange red lump in his eye, it doesnt seem to bother him, it has only popped up in the past hour, and he's acting completely normal, Did he get poked in the eye by some hay, or scratch himself?
Does this require a vet to look at it?

I think this may be caused by a hay poke & needs to be checked by a vet. Your piggy may need to go on a course of antibiotics to fight against any infection.
 
Ys I agree a vet visit is needed. On your description I first thought fatty (or pea) eye but the picture does look more like an injury. He will most likely be given eye drops but the vet will need to put a dye in first to check for damage. He may also need pain relief.
 
So I took jaffa to the vets today, The lump in his eye she said was fine and should clear up. She checked for cataracs, and it was really strange for me to watch her pour liquids into his eye, I felt so bad and hope it didn't sting for him!
Anyway, I was wondering if its normal for them to leave the green fluid in his eye, do they not wash it out?

I would think they leave it to discharge out by itself? Washing it out may cause the eye more irritation than already is there. I am no expert but others may know more :) Did the vet say what the lump actually is?

She didn't know exactly what it is, but she said if its not causing him any irritation we don't want to risk putting him under anesthesia to remove it, and it'll hopefully clear up by itself
 
The dye will come out of its own accord (it may also come out through the tear ducts and thence from his nose). It is used to enable the vet to see if there is any type of ulcer/damage to the eyeball.

What drops were you given please (are they eye or mouth drops and what is the name of the drug?) and can you also let us know your location (this will help us to help you further)

If the eye drops make no difference, please seek a second opinion.

I once saw something similar (not one of my own pigs) but it turned out the pig in question had a hay seed embedded in his eyeball. It had gone unnoticed and fresh tissue had started to grow over the eye leaving the hay seed embedded behind the tissue. The vet cut away the tissue under anaesthetic and it wasn't until that point that the hay seed was found.

Please note, I could be completely wrong and the vet at the time said it was an extremely unusual injury but I just wanted to point it out.

They gave me Clinagel vet for his eye, 1 drop per eye daily. I know there's not a lot of medicines for small animals, just want to make sure is this safe to give him? Looked online it said for dogs and cats and nothing for small animals.
My location is south west, Gloucestershire area
 
No problem. Your vet must have their reasons why they have prescribed you those eye drops although I would have thought a course of oral antibiotics would have also been prescribed for a URI. Is there any reason why your vet suspects a URI?
 
He has had it in the past, Stuffy lungs and white liquid from his eyes. And he had antibiotics then and he seemed to got better but I don't think it really completely went away
 
Just to check, I'm quite hesitant to use the eye gel the vet gave me as I read the leaflet inside and it only says for dogs and cats. I just want to make sure this is safe to use for a guinea? 1399201493644.webp
 
I must admit I have never known anyone myself to have been given these eye drops but please note that a lot of medications given for guinea pigs are not licensed for them and are often licensed for cats and dogs.

But I am pretty sure your vet wouldn't have prescribed something not suitable.

If you are worried, hold off using them but please don't leave it for too long to start treatment.

This is Gentamicin & looking on the search on here there seem to be one or two people that have had these, but also it throws up a known toxicity to piggies so a bit conflicting :( I would definitely wait for Helen/Wiebke or Pebble to advise you before using them :)
 
I know Pebble recommends Tiacil drops which are Gentamycin, so not sure if these are the same thing just with a different product name.
 
No experience with clinagel; I have to leave that to the experts re. active ingredients.
