Misty has had a little lump on her back for ages, me and mum thought it was just a bite so we ignored it. Today I noticed that the lump had a small hole in it. Heres a picture if it helps (the lump itself is just less that pea sized in diameter)

Mum suggested putting some savlon on it, is this safe for guineas?

You really ought to get it checked by a vet as diagnosing anything just from a photo is tricky. Sebaceous cyst possibly.

Not seen anything like this on a piggy before, so if the piggy were mine, i would get it checked by a vet asap.

NO! Sorry for the capitals - but you should NOT use Savlon - it is an anti[*]septic [/*]and is designed to CAUSE an inflammatory reaction and is therefore NOT a recommended medication (either on or off prescription) for piggies.

Please get a vet to check that this (from looking at the pigcture) really [*]is[/*] merely a harmless sebacious cyst -If so, It can be treated with an antibacterial disINFECTANT if appropriate- but until you take your piggie to a vet and report their findings I do not feel it is proper to provide further details as the size/position of the cyst can mean either leave it alone, treat minimally or operate - only your vet can decide and for me to start recommending meds at this stage would be irresponsible.

Please come back once you have the vet's findings and we can advise you further

took misty to the vet today, she squeezed the lump and some black gritty stuff came out. she said this is normal, and we should worry if the discharge was yellow or smelly. we have to keep it clean by bathing it, so for now (touch wood) everything is ok :)

I agree that it sounds and looks like sebaceous cyst, I've heard of the content being dark in colour although I believe a creamy/yellow colour is more common. Difference between sebum (the substance inside sebaceous cysts) and pus (substance inside abscesses) tends to be smell. Abscesses smell rather distinctive!
