Hi,

We've finally adopted a male piggie on Wednesday for our girl piggie, Daisy (her previous male piggie died last month).

Over the last few days we've noticed Daisy making a strange noise every now and then. The only way I can describe it or compare it to, is a cat trying to bring up a hair ball. I've had a look online and on here, which mentions anything from coughs, hiccups, her trying to shift stuck food, through to URI.

I know guineas don't have gag reflex but this noise is something new and we don't know if she needs to see a vet. She's already seeing a vet in a couple of days for another hormone implant to help with her ovarian cysts.

Any advise is welcomed.

Thanks

Maybe get the vet to check it out when she goes in a couple of days, or sooner if it gets worse.

Thank you. We'll monitor her closely tomorrow and call a vet if necessary. If she doesn't make the noises tomorrow or Monday, I'll ask the vet on Tuesday.

The other thing I thought of was URI contracted from the new piggy boy? But I think there’s a low chance of catching that from another piggy...

Thank you. We think she's made this noise before, but only once, every now and then. Yesterday was a few times in the evening, which is why we were concerned. She's still eating, drinking, pooping etc ok, so we'll watch her today. And I'll definitely ask the vet on Tuesday, so they can check her over.

Heard it again just now. Sounds more like a duck, so think it's a cough. We'll see how frequently she does it today and if it's just after eating. If necessary, I can phone our vets to check as I've read a cough can be an allergy to dusty hay or an uri. But she's still eating and drinking and is normal in herself.

One of mine used to cough quite a bit; it was scary at first but then we found that he always did it after drinking and nothing more sinister.

Obviously that might not be the reason for your piggy coughing, but it might be worth seeing whether it's related to drinking

Hi! If in doubt, see a vet sooner, especially if the noise is persistent and not stopping after a few hours.

Describing things is unfortunately very difficult to judge from as we use subjective impressions and ways to express them.

If you can upload a video on a public setting elsewhere and link it into here, then we may be able to help you better. Since we are a forum that is running on member donations, a video uploading facility exceeds our affordable bandwidth considerably.

My pigs occasionally make a similar noise and at first I was worried until I read on here that they can sometime greedily eat and need to clear their airways. Put my mind at rest and they pigs were vet checked and given the all clear

Unfortunately it's so random, I wouldn't know when to record a video to make sure I caught her doing it. It's not constant, more like once every few hours.

It can be something stuck in the airway somewhere. If it happens after eating, then it is likely caused by eating too greedily and swallowing air.
